Festival International de Romans: World Cultures Celebrate
Since 1977, the Festival International de Romans — also known as the Festival International Culture et Traditions du Monde — has been one of the oldest and most prestigious festivals of world dances and music in France. Organized by the association Empi et Riaume, this summer event brings together dance and music troupes from five continents every July in the enchanting setting of Romans-sur-Isère.
Artists from Five Continents
Each edition of the festival invites folkloric and traditional groups from various countries: Cuba, Mexico, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Togo, Georgia, Brazil, India, Japan, Russia... In nearly fifty years of existence, the festival has hosted over 8,000 international artists, demonstrating the richness and diversity of world cultures. The invited troupes perform alongside the local group Empi et Riaume, creating authentic and moving cultural exchanges.
Open-Air Performances in a Heritage Setting
The performances at the Festival International de Romans take place outdoors, notably in the magnificent Jardins du Musée de la Chaussure and at Parc François Mitterrand. This heritage setting offers a unique atmosphere where traditional dances come to life under the Drôme summer sky. Performances are held in the evening, allowing spectators to enjoy the mild summer nights while discovering artistic expressions from around the world.
An Intergenerational and Popular Event
The Festival International de Romans is a popular and intergenerational event that attracts a diverse audience, from families to world culture enthusiasts, from young people to seniors. Affordable prices — with free admission for children under 12 — and the warm atmosphere of the festival contribute to making it an event open to all. Dance workshops, parades through the town streets, and artist meet-and-greets complete the program of performances.
Empi et Riaume: Guardians of Traditions
The association Empi et Riaume, founded in Romans-sur-Isère, has been behind this festival since its creation in 1977. Its name, borrowed from local heritage, symbolizes the territorial roots of this cultural adventure that has continuously grown. A member of CIOFF (International Council of Folklore Festivals and Folk Art), the festival benefits from an international network that allows it to book high-quality troupes from all over the world.
