The summer classic in Gien
Created in 2014 by the association Les Rencontres Musicales de Gien, the Festival Jeux d'Eau is a summer event for classical and chamber music in Gien, on the banks of the Loire. Every summer, for three days, the Auditorium hosts internationally renowned performers and young soloists who have won major competitions. The programming revolves around water, the Loire, and French music. Each concert is followed by a friendly aperitif, allowing spectators to extend the musical experience.
Since 2014, the Festival Jeux d'Eau has established itself as a benchmark summer event for classical music in the Loiret region. Organized by the association Les Rencontres Musicales de Gien (RMG), founded in November 2012, this festival bears an evocative name borrowed from Maurice Ravel's famous piano piece, symbolizing the encounter between water and music that forms the common thread of each edition.
Each year, the Festival Jeux d'Eau offers three concerts over three days in the beautiful setting of the Auditorium de Gien, located in the heart of the town. The program features a strong emphasis on chamber music—string quartets, trios, duos, soloists—and spans all periods of the repertoire: baroque, classical, romantic, and contemporary. The invited artists are top-tier performers, winners of prestigious international competitions such as the Geneva Competition, the Long-Thibaud Competition, or the Queen Elisabeth Competition.
Among the ensembles and soloists who have graced past editions are the Quatuor Équinoxe, the Quatuor Tchalik, Pierre Génisson, the Trio Atanassov, Nathanaël Gouin, the Quatuor Léonis, and the ensemble Saxo Voce. Each edition explores an original theme blending travel, emotion, and musical discovery.
The philosophy of Les Rencontres Musicales de Gien is based on a strong conviction: “We love music, we share it!” Far from the stuffy conventions of concert halls, the Festival Jeux d'Eau cultivates a warm and relaxed atmosphere. Each concert is followed by a “surprise aperitif” featuring local specialties and dishes related to the evening's musical program, offering a special moment of sharing between the audience and the artists.
Accessibility is at the heart of the project: schoolchildren and students benefit from free admission, and ticket prices are deliberately kept moderate to allow as many people as possible to discover classical music in optimal listening conditions.
The festival draws its identity from the deep connection between Gien and the Loire, the longest river in France, which flows through the town and provides an exceptional natural setting. Classified within the Loire Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Gien is also known for its château, its historic faience factory, and its architectural heritage rebuilt after World War II. The Festival Jeux d'Eau is thus part of a region rich in history and culture, contributing to the artistic influence of the Giennois area and the entire Loiret department.
Over the years, the Festival Jeux d'Eau has continued to grow, building a loyal audience of music lovers while attracting new listeners eager to discover classical music. In addition to the summer festival, Les Rencontres Musicales de Gien offers concerts at the Auditorium throughout the year, enriching the cultural life of Gien with diverse programs ranging from piano recitals to chamber music, including saxophone and vocal performances.
The 13th edition of the Festival Jeux d'Eau will take place from July 31st to August 2nd, 2026, at the Auditorium de Gien. Three concerts are scheduled: mezzo-soprano Anousha Nazari accompanied by guitarist Antoine Morinière, the Galilée Quartet, and the Barocco Trio. A new musical journey along the water and the Loire.
The Festival Jeux d'Eau returns for its 13th edition from July 31st to August 2nd, 2026, at the Auditorium de Gien.
