Celebration of pipe-making know-how in Saint-Claude, world capital of the pipe
The Festival of the Pipe of Saint-Claude is an event dedicated to the art and know-how of pipe making, in the city considered the world capital of artisanal pipes. Organized by the Brotherhood of Master Pipe Makers of Saint-Claude, this event brings together pipe makers, collectors, and enthusiasts from around the world. The program includes an international exhibition-sale fair, brotherhood initiation ceremonies, slow smoking contests, visits to manufacturing workshops, and gala dinners. Saint-Claude thus perpetuates an artisanal heritage that has made its international reputation since the 17th century.
Saint-Claude, nestled in the heart of the Haut-Jura, has been recognized since the 17th century as the world capital of the pipe. The Saint-Claude pipe tradition dates back to that era, when woodturners in the region began using briar burl (roots of tree heath) to make pipes of exceptional quality. In the 19th century, Saint-Claude had several hundred workshops and exported its pipes worldwide.
The Brotherhood of Master Pipe Makers of Saint-Claude is the guardian of this age-old tradition. Founded to preserve and promote pipe-making know-how, it regularly organizes initiation ceremonies (called "Chapters") during which new members are inducted into the brotherhood. The 150th Chapter, a historic event, was held in 2025 as part of the first international Pipe Show.
In 2025, Saint-Claude hosted the first International Pipe Show, a global event bringing together pipe makers, collectors, and pipe enthusiasts from all over the world. This exhibition-sale fair is held at the Salle des Fêtes de Saint-Claude and offers:
The Festival of the Pipe offers visits to active manufacturing workshops in Saint-Claude, notably the Chacom, Genod, and Rostiak factories. These visits allow visitors to discover the stages of pipe manufacturing, from briar selection to finishing, including turning, drilling, and polishing.
The Museum of the Pipe and Diamond in Saint-Claude houses an exceptional collection of pipes from around the world, tracing the history of this craft since its origins. The museum hosts the brotherhood's initiation ceremonies and is an essential place to understand Saint-Claude's pipe heritage.
The 2026 initiation ceremony of the Brotherhood of Master Pipe Makers of Saint-Claude is scheduled for June 13, 2026. The full program for the Festival of the Pipe will be announced later.
