Celebration of pipe-making know-how in Saint-Claude, world capital of the pipe
Saint-Claude, nestled in the heart of the Haut-Jura, has been recognized since the 17th century as the world capital of the pipe. The Saint-Claude pipe tradition dates back to that era, when woodturners in the region began using briar burl (roots of tree heath) to make pipes of exceptional quality. In the 19th century, Saint-Claude had several hundred workshops and exported its pipes worldwide.
The Brotherhood of Master Pipe Makers of Saint-Claude is the guardian of this age-old tradition. Founded to preserve and promote pipe-making know-how, it regularly organizes initiation ceremonies (called "Chapters") during which new members are inducted into the brotherhood. The 150th Chapter, a historic event, was held in 2025 as part of the first international Pipe Show.
In 2025, Saint-Claude hosted the first International Pipe Show, a global event bringing together pipe makers, collectors, and pipe enthusiasts from all over the world. This exhibition-sale fair is held at the Salle des Fêtes de Saint-Claude and offers:
The Festival of the Pipe offers visits to active manufacturing workshops in Saint-Claude, notably the Chacom, Genod, and Rostiak factories. These visits allow visitors to discover the stages of pipe manufacturing, from briar selection to finishing, including turning, drilling, and polishing.
The Museum of the Pipe and Diamond in Saint-Claude houses an exceptional collection of pipes from around the world, tracing the history of this craft since its origins. The museum hosts the brotherhood's initiation ceremonies and is an essential place to understand Saint-Claude's pipe heritage.
The 2026 edition of the Fête de la Pipe de Saint-Claude focuses on the 151st Chapter of the Confrérie des Maîtres Pipiers, scheduled for Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14, 2026. There will be no international Pipe Show this year — the 2nd edition of this exhibition is announced for 2027 — but the Confrérie maintains its two traditional events: induction ceremony at the Musée de la Pipe et du Diamant on Saturday evening, slow smoking competition at the Salle des Fêtes on Sunday afternoon.
After the exceptional year 2025, marked by the 150th Chapter and the 1st edition of the international Pipe Show, the Confrérie des Maîtres Pipiers de Saint-Claude returns in 2026 with its usual rhythm: one chapter before summer, another in autumn. The 151st Chapter will be held on Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14, 2026.
The organization has confirmed that the major Pipe Show exhibition will not be held in 2026. Its second edition is scheduled for 2027, the biennial format having been chosen given the organizational burden. The 2026 edition therefore remains focused on the life of the Confrérie, with a more intimate program but open to enthusiasts.
The 151st Chapter takes place at the Musée de la Pipe et du Diamant in Saint-Claude starting at 6:00 PM. The Confrérie elevates an artisan working in Belgium as well as nine other pipe smokers to the rank of Maîtres Pipiers. The ceremony, codified according to the protocol inherited from 1966, is followed by a gala dinner.
The annual pipe smokers' competition is held on Sunday at 2:00 PM at the Salle des Fêtes in Saint-Claude (10 rue Rosset). Participants receive an official Rostiak pipe and Chacom n°7 tobacco; the challenge is to smoke for as long as possible without relighting. Registrations with the Pipe Club de Morez ([email protected]).
Saint-Claude remains, in 2026, the global epicenter of the briar pipe. The Chacom, Genod, and Rostiak manufacturers continue to export their creations worldwide. The Musée de la Pipe et du Diamant and the Confrérie perpetuate an artisanal heritage more than three centuries old.
The detailed program and prices (meal, competition) are available on the official website lapipedesaintclaude.com and on the Confrérie's Facebook page.
The Confrérie des Maîtres Pipiers de Saint-Claude holds two chapters per year — one before summer (in June) and one in autumn — during which new members are inducted. The international Pipe Show, created in 2025 for the 150th Chapter, is announced as a biennial edition: 1st edition on June 28-29, 2025, 2nd edition planned for 2027.
