Intercultural storytelling festival on the Île de Vassivière
The Festival Paroles de Conteurs is the most important storytelling festival in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Organized by the association Conte en Creuse on the Île de Vassivière, this intercultural festival was created in 1995 during the draining of the Vassivière lake, with the aim of extending the tourist season after mid-August. Since then, it has become an unmissable event for French-speaking storytelling art.
The festival offers a rich program with over 80 encounters throughout the week: « Parci-Parlà », open-air performances scattered across the island; « P'tites Z'oreilles », sessions dedicated to families; episodic tales that unfold day by day; open stages for amateur storytellers; « siestes contées » (story naps) for gentle listening; and the traditional evening gatherings, the highlights of each day.
True to its intercultural mission, the festival welcomes French-speaking storytellers from all countries, creating a dialogue between the narrative traditions of the world. The event contributes to the dissemination of performing arts, the education of the public in the art of storytelling, and support for creation. The intergenerational and culturally diverse audience gathers in an exceptional natural setting to share the pleasure of storytelling.
31st edition of the Festival Paroles de Conteurs, from August 22 to 28, 2026 on the shores of Lake Vassivière in Limousin. Intercultural storytelling festival organised by the Conte en Creuse association, with French-speaking storytelling artists from around the world.
The 2026 edition of the Festival Paroles de Conteurs will be held from August 22 to 28 on the shores of Lake Vassivière. For this 31st edition, the organising association Conte en Creuse — which was financially threatened at the beginning of 2026 — confirmed the festival's holding after obtaining a bank loan. The festival will offer more than 80 events: open-air shows (Parci-Parlà), shows for young audiences and families (P'tites Z'oreilles), episodic tales, open stages, storytelling naps and traditional evening gatherings. French-speaking storytelling artists from around the world will be present. The detailed 2026 programme will be published shortly by the organiser.
