About Vallée et Veillée

Every first Saturday of August since the early 2000s, the Festival Vallée et Veillée transforms the Place du Marché au Blé in Noyers-sur-Serein into an open-air popular stage. Organized by the association La Belle du Serein, this free event brings together 800 to 1,000 spectators around four groups playing festive and danceable music — world, afrobeat, electro brass band, chanson — in the heart of one of France's Most Beautiful Villages.

A Popular Festival in the Heart of a Listed Medieval Village

Since the early 2000s, the Festival Vallée et Veillée has established itself as one of the unmissable popular events of the summer in the Yonne region. Every first Saturday of August, the association La Belle du Serein takes over the Place du Marché au Blé in Noyers-sur-Serein to fill the cobblestones of one of France's most beautiful medieval villages with festive and danceable music until the early hours of the morning.

The spirit of the festival is resolutely popular and inclusive: admission is free, food and drinks are available on-site, and the musical program is designed to appeal to a wide audience — families, passing tourists, villagers, and locals — without ever compromising artistic quality. Each edition attracts between 800 and 1,000 people, a remarkable figure for a village of a few hundred inhabitants.

Four Bands, One Night of World Music

The festival's formula is well-honed and effective: four acts take turns on stage from late afternoon until the early hours of the morning, offering an eclectic musical journey that showcases contemporary, traditional, and world music. The genres vary each year — electro brass band, afrobeat, funk, blues, cumbia, samba, gypsy music, French chanson, world music — but the festive energy and the desire to make the audience dance remain the constant threads of the festival.

The 25th edition, in 2025, perfectly illustrates this quality eclecticism:

  • Les Sales Gosses — A violin and accordion duo with a mischievous and touching repertoire, somewhere between humor, tenderness, and virtuosity
  • Teófilo Chantre — A Cap-Verdian world music legend, composer of many hits for Cesária Évora, offering bossa, coladeira, and morna in a captivating rhythm
  • Zeph — A groove, afrobeat, and funk band with influences from Fela Kuti and the Soul Jazz Orchestra, driven by a powerful brass section and an irresistible sense of collective groove
  • LGMX — An electro-acoustic brass band of nine musicians, formed in 2018 to recreate the energy of techno, house, and psytrance with live acoustic instruments

Previous editions featured Eddy King, Dolores, Crocos Lazcar, Volcano, and Molotov Brothers, with themes placed "under the sign of the tropics" or gypsy music, confirming the organizers' commitment to renewing the musical offering each year while maintaining a constant level of artistic excellence.

Noyers-sur-Serein: An Exceptional Medieval Setting

The festival's setting is not insignificant to its success. Noyers-sur-Serein is one of the best-preserved villages in France, nestled in a meander of the Serein river in the heart of the Burgundian Tonnerrois. Classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, the village boasts 78 buildings listed or registered as historical monuments, almost all dating from the 15th century and little altered since.

Its half-timbered houses with jettied upper floors, sculpted columns, paved alleys, and successive squares — including the Place du Marché au Blé where the festival takes place — its medieval towers bordering the Serein, all combine to create a setting of rare architectural coherence. Spared by industrialization and far from major communication routes, Noyers has retained its intact medieval soul.

It is in this timeless setting that La Belle du Serein chose to set up its stage: the cobblestones of the Place du Marché au Blé vibrate under the bass of the electro brass band as they once did under the hooves of grain merchants. The contrast between the medieval architecture and the contemporary energy of the music is at the heart of the festival's visual and sensory identity.

La Belle du Serein: An Association Dedicated to Local Cultural Life

The association La Belle du Serein, based in Noyers-sur-Serein, is the driving force behind the festival. For over twenty years, it has worked to make Vallée et Veillée a unifying event that extends beyond the village borders. Its philosophy is based on three convictions: free access as a guarantee of a truly inclusive popular festival, artistic quality as a condition for programming that respects the audience, and respect for the place as a commitment to the exceptional heritage that hosts the festival.

These principles have allowed the festival to endure for decades, building a loyal and growing audience, comprising both regulars who return each year and tourists attracted by the reputation of the medieval village who discover the festival by chance or curiosity. Word-of-mouth, amplified in recent years by social media, has helped to make Vallée et Veillée known far beyond the borders of the Yonne region.

An Event Rooted in the Serein Territory

The festival is part of a culturally rich region. A few kilometers from Noyers, the Rencontres Musicales de Noyers offers a program of classical music and an international summer academy of excellence in the village's Gothic church each July. The two events, musically different, complement each other and together contribute to making Noyers-sur-Serein one of the most culturally active villages in the Yonne relative to its size.

The Serein, a gentle river that flows through the Tonnerrois from the Langres plateau to the Yonne, gives its name to the village, the organizing association, and the community of communes. It is around this discreet and preserved valley that links are forged between inhabitants, associations, and communes, of which the Festival Vallée et Veillée is one of the most vibrant cultural expressions.
