The great summer festival of the Gigondas appellation in the heart of the Dentelles de Montmirail
Nestled on the hillside at the foot of the majestic Dentelles de Montmirail, the village of Gigondas is one of the most beautiful appellations in the southern Rhône Valley. Recognized as a communal appellation since 1971, Gigondas AOC covers approximately 1,200 hectares of terraced vines on south-facing slopes, offering views of Mont Ventoux and the Comtat Venaissin plains.
The Gigondas terroir is remarkably complex: red clays and rolled pebbles in the lower areas, limestone and sandstone in the upper parts of the Dentelles, sandy soils in the flat areas. This geological mosaic, combined with exceptional sunshine and the mistral wind that purifies the grapes, produces wines of great personality. The reds of Gigondas, dominated by Grenache (at least 80%), Syrah, and Mourvèdre, are powerful, full-bodied, spicy, and capable of aging in the cellar for one to two decades. The rosés, fresh and fruity, are an attractive alternative for the Provençal summer.
The Fête des Vins de Gigondas is the highlight of the village's wine and festive calendar. Each summer, it brings together the appellation's winemakers and estates for a celebration that is both convivial and of high quality. Stands are set up in the squares and alleys of the medieval village, transforming Gigondas into a vast open-air tasting lounge.
Visitors, armed with their festival glass, wander freely from estate to estate, meeting producers and discovering the diversity of the vintages — from wines for aging to more accessible young wines, from reds to rosés, and the rare whites of the appellation. Renowned winemakers and emerging producers participate in the festival, offering a complete and dynamic vision of the appellation.
Provençal gastronomy is at the heart of the festival. Local producers and food artisans offer their specialties: tapenade and marinated olives from the region, goat cheeses from the Dentelles, artisanal charcuterie, lavender and garrigue honey, fruity black and fruity green olive oil. Local restaurateurs serve cooked dishes with Provençal flavors, enhanced by pairings with Gigondas wines.
Tasting workshops and food and wine pairing sessions allow both novices and experienced amateurs to deepen their knowledge of the appellation and refine their palate. Oenologists and winemakers share their passion and expertise with a generosity characteristic of Provence.
Music and entertainment punctuate the days and evenings of the Wine Festival. Concerts of Provençal music, jazz, and world music liven up the village squares under the summer stars. Local and regional bands create a festive and warm atmosphere, typical of Provence in summer. Family entertainment and guided tours of the village and vineyards complete the program.
The festival is the ideal opportunity to discover Gigondas, listed among the most beautiful villages in France. Its cobbled streets, fountains, Romanesque collegiate church, and panoramas of the Dentelles and Mont Ventoux form an exceptional setting. Nearby, Vacqueyras and its appellation, the village of Séguret, and the Dentelles de Montmirail for hikers complete a stay in the most picturesque part of the Vaucluse.
The great summer festival of Gigondas wines, organized by the Syndicat des Vignerons under the name of Gigondas sur Table, returns on Monday, July 20, 2026, to Place Gabrielle Andeol, in the heart of the classified village of Dentelles de Montmirail. From 8 PM to 11:30 PM, four chefs, a cheesemonger, a pastry chef, and more than 40 winemakers and merchants of the appellation will celebrate wine and good food together.
The great summer event for Gigondas wines will take place on Monday, July 20, 2026, from 8 PM to 11:30 PM, on Place Gabrielle Andeol. The village square transforms into a giant open-air table, in the natural amphitheater formed by the Dentelles de Montmirail overlooking the Rhone valley at sunset.
For this edition, four chefs accompanied by a cheesemonger and a pastry chef will create their recipes around the appellation's cuvées. More than 40 winemakers and merchants from Gigondas will offer tastings of their wines, which guests can pair from stand to stand in search of the perfect match. The guest of honor region for 2026 is AOP Picpoul de Pinet.
The event is by reservation only (single price 60 € per person); ticket sales open on June 2, 2026, on billetweb.fr.
Gigondas is located in the Vaucluse (84), 15 km north of Carpentras and 20 km east of Orange.
Hours vary depending on the edition. Admission is usually paid and includes an official tasting glass. Free for young people. Consult the website or the tourist office for updated prices.
