The big popular festival of Marseille's oldest district, with concerts, street performances, and crafts
The Fête du Panier is the festive and popular event of Marseille's oldest district. Every year at the end of June, the alleys, squares, and staircases of Le Panier come alive for two days of concerts, street performances, exhibitions, workshops, and craft markets. Free and open to all, this neighborhood festival celebrates the conviviality, cultural diversity, and living heritage of this emblematic district of the Phocaean city.
The Fête du Panier is a festive and popular event that animates the Le Panier district each year, the oldest district in Marseille, nestled on the hill overlooking the Vieux-Port. For two days, usually the last weekend of June, the squares, alleys, and staircases of this historic district transform into open-air stages. Concerts, brass bands, street theater, exhibitions, children's workshops, and craft markets fill every corner of Le Panier, from Place de Lenche to Place du Refuge, via Place des Pistoles and Place du Moulin.
The Fête du Panier's program is particularly dense and eclectic over two days. It includes major concerts, DJ sets, street performances, theater, choirs, dance demonstrations, and brass bands. Children are not forgotten, with creative workshops, adapted concerts, donkey rides, and fun activities. A grand ball traditionally concludes the festivities, bringing together neighborhood residents and visitors in an atmosphere of popular celebration and sharing.
Le Panier is the historic cradle of Marseille, founded by the Greeks of Phocaea 2,600 years ago. This district with its narrow, steep streets, colorful facades, and shaded squares is a place of life that has always welcomed people from elsewhere, forging a cosmopolitan and popular identity. The Fête du Panier celebrates this cultural diversity by highlighting the residents, local associations, artisans, and shopkeepers of the district. It is also an opportunity to (re)discover the architectural heritage of Le Panier, from the Vieille Charité to the Centre de la Vieille Charité, as well as the many art galleries and artist studios that populate its streets.
The Fête du Panier was interrupted for several years after the cessation of subsidies from the Conseil général in 2014. The City of Marseille relaunched neighborhood festivals starting in 2024, reviving this popular tradition under the name Fête des ruelles. The goal is to celebrate the conviviality and cultural richness of the district by highlighting local residents, associations, and shopkeepers, in a festive, participatory, and free spirit. The festivities are now part of the broader L'Été Marseillais (Marseille Summer), the city's summer cultural program covering all districts from June to September.
