The Fête du Sabot: when old trades come back to life in Lautrec
Every third Sunday of July, the cobbled streets and shaded squares of Lautrec, one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France nestled in the hills of the Pays de Cocagne, come alive to the rhythm of old trades and ancient crafts. The Fête du Sabot et des Vieux Métiers is a festive and educational event, entirely free, which revives the time when clog makers, blacksmiths, coopers, weavers, wheelwrights, and potters punctuated the life of Occitan countryside.
Old trades on demonstration
The festival is above all a living space for demonstration and sharing of ancestral know-how. Craftsmen and enthusiasts recreate the gestures of yesteryear before the visitors:
- The clog maker carves his clogs from wood using his traditional tools, under the fascinated gaze of children
- The blacksmith strikes metal on the anvil, in fire and sparks
- The grinder sharpens knives and tools on his grindstone
- The cooper assembles staves and hoops to shape his barrels
- The spinner transforms wool into thread on her spinning wheel
- The basket maker weaves willow and rattan to create baskets and hampers
These interactive demonstrations allow visitors, especially the younger ones, to understand how their ancestors lived and to appreciate the skill and know-how accumulated over centuries in Occitan workshops and farms.
The Lautrec windmill in operation
A highlight of the day, the operation of the Lautrec windmill is a unique spectacle. This restored mill, one of the village's emblems, is activated when wind conditions permit, and visitors can discover the ancient mechanisms of grain milling and the ingenuity of millers of the past. A guide explains the operation of the wooden machinery and the history of this mill that overlooks the tiled roofs of the medieval city.
Gourmet market and pink garlic soup
The festival would not be complete without its gourmet temptations. The gourmet market offers local specialties: cured meats, cheeses, jams, honeys, and of course, the essential Lautrec pink garlic, a flagship product of the Pays de Cocagne recognized by an IGP and a Label Rouge. The pink garlic soup, generously served to visitors, is one of the most appreciated moments of conviviality of the day: a steaming bowl of this golden and fragrant soup, to be enjoyed while sitting on the medieval steps of the village, is a memorable taste and sensory experience.
Lautrec, Most Beautiful Village of France
Lautrec is one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, a label that rewards rural communes with exceptional heritage. Its medieval ramparts, its half-timbered houses, its winding streets, its panoramas over the Lauragais plains and the first foothills of the Black Mountain make it a village of striking beauty. The Fête du Sabot finds a perfect setting here: this built heritage, the result of the work of generations of artisans and builders, naturally resonates with the promotion of old trades. The festival is an opportunity to discover or rediscover Lautrec on foot, taking the time to admire every architectural detail and let the history of the village tell its secrets.
A family and educational event
The Fête du Sabot et des Vieux Métiers is a multi-generational event. Children are the most delighted: they can try old tools, see draft animals, touch raw materials, and understand how everyday objects were made in the past. Adults rediscover the taste of a slower time, that of patient craftsmanship and handmade quality. And everyone leaves with a little more respect for these trades that have shaped our civilization.
