The Fête du Violon: A Unique Festival Dedicated to Popular Violin

Every February, the town of Luzy, in the southern Nivernais Morvan, vibrates to the sound of the violin in all its forms. The Fête du Violon, supported by the association Cordes en Folies since 2002, is a rare and precious festival that explores the different practices and aesthetics of popular violin playing, from tradition to contemporary music.

A Musical Journey Around the World

The festival highlights musical traditions from around the world where the violin plays a central role. Each edition is built around one or more invited countries or regions: Quebec, Appalachia, Scotland, Normandy, Mali, Ireland, Scandinavia... This international openness makes the Fête du Violon a true crossroads of cultures, where traditional music dialogues and enriches each other.

Rhythmic Articulation for Dance and Modal Improvisation

The festival is particularly interested in musical traditions that emphasize rhythmic articulation for dance and modal improvisation. These two characteristics, shared by many violin traditions worldwide, form the common thread of the programming.

A Rich and Varied Program

For three days, the Fête du Violon offers:

  • Concerts by nationally and internationally renowned musicians
  • Traditional dances open to all
  • Violin workshops for all levels
  • Dance workshops
  • Micro-concerts in intimate venues
  • Screenings of documentary films
  • Spontaneous jam sessions
  • Luthiers' exhibition
  • Workshop recitals

A Winter Festival in Morvan

The choice of February for this violin celebration is bold and original. While most festivals take place in the summer, the Fête du Violon enlivens the Morvan winter, offering a warm musical gathering in the heart of the cold season. This positioning contributes to the cultural dynamism of Luzy, which also hosts the Fête de l'Accordéon in August.
