The Fête du Welsh: A tribute to a cult dish

The Fête du Welsh pays homage to the most iconic dish of the Opal Coast: the welsh. This hearty dish, made with cheddar melted in beer, is served on toast and traditionally accompanied by ham, a fried egg, and fries. In Le Portel, this popular delicacy is celebrated every summer over a festive and gourmet weekend.

A gastronomic weekend

Throughout the festival, all restaurants in Le Portel participate by featuring the welsh on their menus, for both lunch and dinner. Each establishment showcases its own recipe, sometimes traditional, sometimes revisited with original variations. It's an opportunity for food lovers to embark on a culinary tour of the restaurants and compare the different versions of this dish that has become a cult favorite in the Boulonnais region.

Beachside entertainment

Alongside the tastings, Le Portel beach transforms into a festive area with free entertainment for families: inflatable games, carousels, play structures, and sports activities for children. This seaside entertainment complements the program and makes the Fête du Welsh a complete event, combining culinary pleasures with beachside leisure.

Music and festive atmosphere

Concerts and musical entertainment punctuate the weekend, bringing a festive atmosphere to the streets and seafront of Le Portel. Local artists and bands perform for the delight of visitors, creating a warm and friendly ambiance typical of coastal festivals.

Le Portel, a fishing village

Le Portel is a coastal town located just south of Boulogne-sur-Mer. Once a fishing village, the town has retained its authentic character and its attachment to maritime and gastronomic traditions. The Fête du Welsh is part of a rich calendar of festive events on the coast, alongside sea festivals, herring festivals, and carnivals that mark the life of the Opal Coast.

The welsh, pride of the Boulonnais

While the welsh originated in Wales, it has become a true culinary phenomenon in the Boulonnais region. Served in almost all restaurants in the area, the welsh is a convivial and comforting dish, perfect for cool coastal evenings. The Fête du Welsh celebrates this special attachment of the people of the Opal Coast to this dish that has become a symbol of local gastronomy.
