Four days of celebration in green and white at the confluence of the Gaves
The Fêtes de Peyrehorade are the local festivals of this historic town in the Pays d'Orthe, in the south of the Landes, at the confluence of the Gaves de Pau and d'Oloron. For four days in early August, the town is adorned in green and white, its distinctive colors, for festivities combining Landes races, concerts, a parade, a zip line over the Gaves, open-air cinema, laser game, children's entertainment, and a musical firework display. Led by the bands Los Gatchos and Los Bombanceros, the festivals make this medieval town vibrate with a mix of Landes traditions and modernity.
The Fêtes de Peyrehorade are the major annual festive event in Peyrehorade, a town of over 3,500 inhabitants located at the confluence of the Gaves de Pau and d'Oloron, in the Pays d'Orthe, in the south of the Landes. A former viscountcy founded in the 13th century, Peyrehorade prospered thanks to its commercial activity and its river port, and today it perpetuates its festive traditions with energy and originality.
Peyrehorade distinguishes itself from other Landes férias by its choice of festive colors: green and white. This chromatic singularity gives the festivals a unique and recognizable visual identity, different from the red and white that dominates in the férias of the Southwest.
The program for the Fêtes de Peyrehorade unfolds over four days with original highlights:
The Fêtes de Peyrehorade are enlivened by two emblematic bands: Los Gatchos and Los Bombanceros. These musical groups create the festive atmosphere that characterizes the festivals, parading through the streets and squares of the town from morning to night, drawing revelers into an atmosphere of joy and conviviality.
Peyrehorade's location at the confluence of the Gaves gives the festivals a unique character. The zip line over the Gaves is the most spectacular illustration of this relationship between the town and its rivers. The medieval setting of the town, with its old streets and half-timbered houses, provides a picturesque backdrop for the festivities.
The Fêtes de Peyrehorade are part of the festive tradition of the Pays d'Orthe, a region in the Landes located between Dax and Bayonne, known for its gastronomy (Adour kiwi, Gaves salmon), its historical heritage, and its living traditions. It is also the capital of the winter 'marché au gras' (fat market), famous throughout the Southwest.
Peyrehorade is located on the D817, 30 km east of Bayonne and 40 km south of Dax. Free parking is available near the town center, notably the station parking lot and the fronton parking lot. During the festivals, some streets in the historic center are closed to traffic.
Peyrehorade station is served by TER Nouvelle-Aquitaine trains on the Dax-Bayonne line. The town center is a 5-minute walk from the station. This is the most convenient way to come to the festivals without a car.
The XL'R network of the Landes department serves Peyrehorade from Dax and the neighboring towns of the Pays d'Orthe.
The festivities take place in the historic town center of Peyrehorade, this medieval town built at the confluence of the Gaves. The bullfighting shows take place in the municipal bullring. The spectacular zip line crosses the united Gaves, offering a unique aerial view of the confluence. Open-air cinema is set up against the church. The laser game takes place at the fronton. The 'bodegas' and entertainment are spread throughout the streets and squares of the historic center.
Friday: Foulées du Cœur at 6 pm, key ceremony for the 20th-anniversary class at 8 pm, concert at 10 pm, stage at 11 pm. Saturday: zip line over the Gaves and children's entertainment during the day, 'bal musette' at 3 pm, Comico Taurin Show at 6 pm in the bullring, parade at 9:30 pm, stage at 11 pm. Sunday: laser game at the fronton from 10 am to 11 pm, musical mass at 11 am, mayor's reception at 12 pm, Landes race at 5 pm in the bullring, open-air cinema at 9:45 pm, stage at 11 pm. Monday: musical entertainment, return of the keys at 10:45 pm, musical firework display at 11:15 pm.
Access to street entertainment, concerts, parade, zip line, and open-air cinema is free. Bullfighting shows in the bullring (Comico Taurin Show and Landes race) are paid. Tickets are on sale at the Pays d'Orthe tourist office.
The official colors of the Fêtes de Peyrehorade are green and white. Wearing a green scarf is encouraged to fully participate in the festive atmosphere and distinguish yourself from neighboring red and white férias.
The associative 'bodegas' and 'estanquets' offer food based on products from the Pays d'Orthe: foie gras, confit, Gaves salmon, Adour kiwi, and Landes specialties. The mayor's reception on Sunday is a moment of conviviality offered to all.
