When Catherine de Medicis met Nostradamus
The Fetes Renaissance of Salon-de-Provence celebrate a prestigious episode in the city's history: the visit in 1564 by Catherine de Medicis and her royal court to Nostradamus, the famous doctor and astrologer who lived and died in Salon-de-Provence. The association Fetes et Culture a Salon offers to relive this historical event every year, at the end of June, with the participation of over 1,000 extras — volunteers and professionals — in period costumes.
Three days of celebration in the old town
For three days, the historic center of Salon-de-Provence and the Chateau de l'Emperi are transformed into a vast Renaissance theater. Encampments are set up on Place Morgan and in the alleys of the old town, with taverns, banquets, combat scenes, songs, and demonstrations of Renaissance craftsmanship.
Parades, shows, and craft market
The grand parades in period costumes are the highlights of the Fetes Renaissance. On Friday and Saturday evenings at 9 PM, a procession of villagers, beggars, fire-eaters, and witches winds through the streets of the old town to a grand finale show. A Renaissance craft market brings together about forty artisans who present their traditional skills. Workshops and games allow visitors of all ages to immerse themselves in 16th-century life.
A popular and family-friendly event
With nearly 20,000 spectators each year, the Fetes Renaissance have become one of the most popular events in Salon-de-Provence. The festive and family-friendly atmosphere, free access to most activities, and the quality of the historical reenactments make it a must-attend event for history lovers and families.
