The world's largest black pudding competition
The Foire au Boudin de Mortagne-au-Perche is an emblematic gastronomic event held annually in March in this medieval town in the Orne region. Created in 1967, this fair brings together around 25,000 visitors and 170 exhibitors around black pudding, a renowned charcuterie specialty from the Perche region. The highlight of the event, the International Black Pudding Competition, organized by the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Goûte-Boudin, attracts charcuterie makers from all over the world to compete in various categories.
The Foire au Boudin de Mortagne-au-Perche has perpetuated the tradition of black pudding, an emblematic specialty of the Perche region, since 1967. What began as a simple local fair has become, over the decades, one of the largest gastronomic events in Normandy, attracting nearly 25,000 visitors each year and bringing together 170 exhibitors in the streets of the medieval town.
The true heart of the event, the International Black Pudding Competition, is organized by the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Goûte-Boudin. The qualifying rounds take place on Thursday afternoon, followed by the final on Friday. Charcuterie makers from France and around the world present their creations in several categories: traditional black pudding, old-fashioned pudding, creative pudding... This competition highlights the excellence of unique know-how and promotes Mortagne-au-Perche internationally.
Founded to promote and preserve the tradition of Mortagne black pudding, the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Goûte-Boudin is the soul of the fair. Its members, recognizable by their traditional costumes, ensure the organization of the competition and oversee the transmission of this unique gastronomic heritage.
Beyond the competition, the fair offers a vast market of local producers and artisans. The streets of Mortagne are transformed into a huge indoor and outdoor market where you can taste and buy local Perche products: black pudding, of course, but also cider, perry, cheeses, charcuterie, honey, jams, and other Norman specialties.
The fair is accompanied by numerous events: demonstrations of black pudding making by professional charcuterie makers, cooking workshops with local chefs, street performances, concerts, and activities for children. The official inauguration brings together local dignitaries and guests of honor, as in 2026 with the expected presence of figures from the sports and gastronomic world.
Mortagne-au-Perche, perched on its promontory overlooking the surrounding countryside, offers a remarkable medieval setting for this fair. Its cobbled streets, half-timbered houses, and listed architectural heritage form an authentic backdrop that fully contributes to the charm of the event.
