Large annual fair for small livestock with flea market in the heart of Sologne
Every year in May, the village of Saint-Viâtre in Sologne hosts its Foire aux Petits Élevages with flea market, an unmissable event for lovers of poultry and livestock farming in Loir-et-Cher. On the fairgrounds, breeders and enthusiasts present poultry, rabbits, pigeons, and other small animals, while a vast flea market, local producers, exhibiting artists, and festive entertainment complete the program. The fair is preceded by a friendly fair dinner organized by the festival committee.
In the heart of Sologne, the village of Saint-Viâtre perpetuates a centuries-old rural tradition with its Foire aux Petits Élevages (Small Livestock Fair), held every year in May. This festive and popular event brings together breeders, flea market vendors, producers, and families on the village's fairgrounds, in a warm and authentic atmosphere that reflects the deep identity of Sologne in Loir-et-Cher.
The main aspect of the fair is dedicated to small livestock: dozens of breeders present and sell poultry (chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, guinea fowl), rabbits, pigeons, ornamental birds, and other small farm animals. Poultry and amateur breeding enthusiasts will find an exceptional selection of breeds, from the most common to the rarest. Exhibitions and competitions reward the finest specimens presented by breeders from the region and beyond.
Alongside the small livestock, a vast flea market extends across the fairgrounds, attracting bargain hunters and antique lovers. Local producers offer their specialties: Sologne honey, goat cheeses, cured meats, jams, and artisanal pastries. Exhibiting artists present paintings, sculptures, and crafts inspired by the Sologne landscapes. Fairground rides and children's entertainment complete the festive program.
The evening before the fair, the Fair Dinner organized by the festival committee of Saint-Viâtre brings together locals and visitors for a festive meal. By reservation, this communal dinner celebrates the spirit of conviviality and sharing that characterizes village life in Sologne. It's an opportunity to gather before the big fair day tomorrow.
A commune of about 1,200 inhabitants, Saint-Viâtre is known for its ponds, forests, and preserved Sologne landscapes. The village also boasts remarkable architectural heritage, with its church and traditional brick houses. The small livestock fair contributes to the renown of this commune and the preservation of Sologne's rural traditions.
The Foire aux Petits Élevages is held annually on a Wednesday in May (Ascension Day), on the Saint-Viâtre fairgrounds. The Fair Dinner takes place the evening before, by reservation.
