The major ceramics event in the heart of Burgundy's Puisaye region
Since 1982, the Foire des Potiers (Potters' Fair) in Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye has brought together over 70 professional ceramists and potters from across France and abroad every third weekend in July. Set in the magnificent château park, opposite the Musée Colette, they exhibit tableware, sculptures, jewelry, and decorative objects in stoneware, porcelain, and earthenware. Free admission, free children's workshops, and on-site catering make this event a must-see of the Burgundian summer.
Every third weekend in July, Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye transforms into a vibrant capital of ceramic art. The Foire des Potiers, founded in 1982 on the initiative of the town's Festival Committee, has established itself over the decades as one of the benchmark events for ceramics in France. In the exceptional setting of the château park, opposite the Musée Colette, over 70 professional ceramists and potters set up their stands for two days of discovery and wonder.
It is no coincidence that this fair was born in Puisaye. Since the Middle Ages, this region in northern Burgundy has been renowned for the exceptional quality of its clays and natural pigments. Potters settled here as early as the 14th century, attracted by the rich, fatty soils that gave stoneware incomparable strength and beauty. To this day, Puisaye is labeled a City of Arts and Crafts, and its workshops perpetuate a centuries-old tradition.
Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye holds a central place in this heritage. The birthplace of Colette, whose childhood home and dedicated museum welcome thousands of visitors, benefits from a cultural influence that extends far beyond the borders of the Yonne department. The Foire des Potiers is fully integrated into this identity, offering an exceptional showcase for arts and crafts every year.
The selection of exhibitors is rigorous. The fair welcomes both established ceramists, recognized on the national and international scene, and young talents passionate about working with clay and fire. This diversity guarantees a rich and stimulating panorama of contemporary ceramics:
The fair's location is a major attraction in itself. The park of the Château de Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye offers a green and shaded space, ideal for strolling serenely from one stand to another. Opposite it, the Musée Colette reminds us that this Burgundian village is the birthplace of one of France's greatest writers, who lyrically described the landscapes, scents, and flavors of this land of clay. This dual artistic and literary dimension gives the event a unique atmosphere.
The Foire des Potiers is much more than just a craft market. Throughout the weekend, numerous activities enrich the visit:
Over the years, the Foire des Potiers has gained a reputation that extends beyond national borders. Foreign ceramists, particularly from Europe, regularly exhibit their creations, demonstrating the event's international reach. The fair is also promoted by the tourist offices of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and the Yonne department, making it one of the summer highlights in the region.
With attendance of several thousand visitors over the weekend, the Foire des Potiers de Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye represents a key moment for art lovers, collectors, families, and the simply curious. It actively contributes to the preservation and transmission of ceramic know-how in Puisaye, while offering artisans essential visibility and commercial outlets for their work.
