Breaking and hip-hop culture festival in Angers
Générations Break is an event dedicated to breaking and hip-hop culture, led by Le Quai - CDN d'Angers and CNDC. Developed with choreographer Bruce Chiefare, this festival combines shows, participatory workshops, a parade, screenings, round tables, and performances by dancers from the hip-hop scene. Created in 2024 as part of the Cultural Olympiad, it questions the boundary between sport and art and invites all audiences to dive into the world of breakdance.
Générations Break is a unique event in France, born from the collaboration between Le Quai - CDN Angers Pays de la Loire and CNDC (National Center for Contemporary Dance), on the occasion of breaking's inclusion in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Spearheaded by choreographer Bruce Chiefare, an emblematic figure in French breakdancing, this festival invites the public to move beyond the question of 'sport or art?' to fully immerse themselves in the practice and culture of breaking.
The festival offers a multidisciplinary program centered around breaking: performances by dancers and choreographers from the hip-hop scene (Mellina Boubetra, Lise Dusuel, Alexandre Fandard, Sandrine Lescourant, Naoko Tozawa, Timothée Lejolivet), discovery and introductory workshops open to all, film screenings, a photographic exhibition, round tables on the evolution of the professional hip-hop world across generations, and a large participatory parade starting from the esplanade Cœur de Maine.
The Block Party on the forecourt of Le Quai, with free access, is one of the event's festive highlights, bringing together dancers, musicians, and the public in the original spirit of hip-hop.
The event unfolds in several spaces within and around Le Quai: the forum of Le Quai, the forecourt, Parc Balzac, and the banks of the Maine river. This outdoor setting and public space presence reinforces the festival's popular and accessible dimension, in line with the founding values of hip-hop culture.
Générations Break received support from the Ministry of Culture as part of the Paris 2024 Cultural Olympiad, demonstrating institutional recognition of breaking as a full-fledged artistic discipline.
The 3rd edition of Générations Break will be held in Spring 2026 at Le Quai - CDN d'Angers. The breaking and hip-hop culture festival will offer shows, workshops, a participatory parade, and a block party.
Générations Break returns for its 3rd edition at Le Quai - CDN d'Angers in Spring 2026. The festival will continue to explore the richness of breaking culture through performances, participatory workshops, screenings, and events.
The full program will be announced in early 2026 on the Le Quai CDN website.
