About George Sand Festival

The George Sand Short Film Festival is a cinematic event established in La Châtre in 2026 to mark the 150th anniversary of the writer George Sand's passing. Organized by the Culture en Vallée Noire association, it invites both amateur and professional filmmakers to create short films under fifteen minutes inspired by George Sand's life, political activism, fight for women's rights, environmentalism, or her deep connection to the Berry region. Twenty films are selected and screened at the Le Lux cinema in La Châtre, competing for seven awards. Each year, an audiovisual production residency brings amateur filmmakers together ahead of the festival.

George Sand Short Film Festival: Cinema as a Tool for Advocacy

The George Sand Short Film Festival was born in 2026 in La Châtre, in the heart of the Berry region, just a few kilometers from Nohant, the home of George Sand. This cinematic event was created to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the death of the writer (1804-1876), a major figure in French literature and a pioneer of social and feminist activism.

A Call for Engaged Cinema

The festival invites amateur and professional filmmakers from all over France to submit their work. Participants are encouraged to create short films under fifteen minutes—whether fiction, documentary, or animation—drawing inspiration from George Sand's life or her progressive ideas: women's emancipation, political engagement, ecology, or a connection to the Berry landscape. Entries are open from June 8 to September 6, 2026, on the festival website, with an entry fee of 12 euros.

Screenings and Awards

Twenty short films are selected from the submissions and screened on October 10 and 11, 2026, at the Le Lux cinema in La Châtre. The films compete for seven distinct awards: Jury Prize, Amateur Film Prize, Audience Award, Best Screenplay, Best Direction, Best Sound Design, and Best Acting. The jury for this inaugural edition is chaired by screenwriter and director Thomas Bidegain, co-writer of Un prophète and Dheepan.

An Audiovisual Production Residency

Leading up to the festival, an audiovisual production residency took place in La Châtre from May 8 to 10, 2026, bringing together fourteen amateur filmmakers aged 15 to 64 from La Châtre, Châteauroux, Bourges, Guéret, and Paris. Guided by audiovisual professionals, they wrote, filmed, and edited two short films in just three days.

An Initiative Driven by Berry Enthusiasts

The festival is spearheaded by audiovisual producer Pauline Michel and editor/director Thibaud Deschamps, two young professionals deeply attached to the Berry region. Together, they founded the Culture en Vallée Noire association to foster cinematic culture in George Sand's homeland and create a unifying event centered on the writer's literary heritage and humanist values.
