Festival of committed short films inspired by the work and values of George Sand
The George Sand Short Film Festival is a new cinematic event created in La Châtre in 2026, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the death of writer George Sand. Organized by the association Culture en Vallée Noire, this festival invites amateurs and professionals to create short films of less than fifteen minutes inspired by the life, political commitment, the fight for women's rights, ecology, or attachment to the Berry region of George Sand. Twenty films are selected and screened at the Le Lux cinema in La Châtre, competing for eight distinct awards.
The George Sand Short Film Festival is born in 2026 in La Châtre, in the Berry region, a few kilometers from Nohant, George Sand's home. This cinematic event is created on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the writer's death (1804-1876), a major figure in French literature and a pioneer of social and feminist commitment.
The festival launches a call for films open to amateurs and professionals alike, throughout France. Participants are invited to create short films of less than fifteen minutes — fiction, documentary, or animation — inspired by George Sand's life or her progressive ideas: women's emancipation, political commitment, ecology, attachment to the Berry region. Registrations are open from June 8 to September 6, 2026, on the festival website, with a registration fee of 12 euros.
Twenty short films are selected from the submissions and screened on October 10 and 11, 2026, at the Le Lux cinema in La Châtre. The films compete for eight distinct awards, recognizing artistic quality, relevance of the message, and creativity of the directors. The awards ceremony is the highlight of the festival.
In the lead-up to the festival, a film creation residency is offered on May 8, 9, and 10, 2026. Aimed at about fifteen middle and high school students, this three-day residency allows young people to learn about making short films under the guidance of audiovisual professionals. Participants discover all stages of film creation: scriptwriting, shooting, editing, and post-production.
The festival is driven by Pauline Michel, an audiovisual producer, and Thibaud Deschamps, an editor and director, two young professionals deeply attached to the Berry region. Together, they founded the association Culture en Vallée Noire to bring cinematic culture to life in George Sand's homeland and create a unifying event around the literary heritage and humanist values of the writer.
