The largest Breton pilgrimage at the sanctuary of Saint Anne
The Grand Pardon of Sainte-Anne-d'Auray is the most important pilgrimage in Brittany, gathering around 20,000 pilgrims each year around July 26th, the feast day of Saint Anne, patron saint of Brittany. This centuries-old pardon, rooted in the sanctuary where Saint Anne is said to have appeared in 1625, combines grand processions, masses in Breton, sacred chants, fest-deiz, and concerts in an atmosphere of fervor and fraternity. A unique spiritual and cultural event that perpetuates the deepest Breton identity.
The Grand Pardon of Sainte-Anne-d'Auray is the most important pilgrimage in Brittany and one of the largest popular faith events in France. Each year around July 26th, the feast day of Saint Anne, patron saint of Brittany and grandmother of Jesus, around 20,000 pilgrims converge on the sanctuary of Sainte-Anne-d'Auray for a time of prayer, reconciliation, and celebration.
Tradition holds that in 1625, Saint Anne appeared to Yves Nicolazic, a humble farmer from Ker Anna, asking him to rebuild a chapel that had been destroyed for nearly a thousand years. The discovery of an ancient statue of Saint Anne at the location indicated by the apparition attracted a flood of pilgrims and gave birth to the sanctuary we know today. For four centuries, the Grand Pardon has perpetuated this tradition of devotion.
The Grand Pardon unfolds over two to three days around July 26th. The program includes solemn masses at the Memorial, including a mass in Breton on the morning of the 26th, a grand procession led by the statue of "Madame Sainte Anne" through the sanctuary grounds, pontifical vespers, sacred chants performed by vocal and instrumental ensembles, and times for confession and reconciliation. The Kevrenn Alre, a renowned Breton traditional music group, participates in the festivities.
Beyond its spiritual dimension, the Grand Pardon is also a moment of Breton celebration. A fest-deiz is organized on the afternoon of July 26th, bringing together dancers and musicians in a festive atmosphere. Concerts of sacred and traditional music, a fireworks display, and cultural activities complete the program, making the pardon a total event that appeals to both believers and lovers of Breton culture.
The Grand Pardon of Sainte-Anne-d'Auray transcends the religious framework to constitute a major identity event for Brittany. The mass in Breton, traditional songs, Breton costumes worn by participants, and the presence of musicians and bagadoù demonstrate the vitality of Breton culture and its deep connection with spirituality. The pardon is both an act of faith and a cultural affirmation.
