About Heritage Days 93
Heritage Days 93 — edition 2026
The 43rd European Heritage Days will take place on Saturday, September 19th and Sunday, September 20th, 2026, focusing on the themes of photographic heritage and heritage in peril. In Seine-Saint-Denis, 119 sites across 30 municipalities have been registered as of August 16th, offering 248 events: the Basilica Cathedral of Saint-Denis, the Air and Space Museum, the National Archives, the memorials of Drancy and Bobigny, garden cities, railway halls, and artist studios.
2026 Edition
The Ministry of Culture is organizing the 43rd edition of the European Heritage Days on Saturday, September 19th and Sunday, September 20th, 2026. Two themes intersect this year: "Photographic Heritage," chosen for the bicentenary of the process's invention, and "Heritage in Peril: Revive, Resist, Reimagine," adopted at the European level. On Friday, September 18th, the "Look Up!" initiative will open these same sites to school groups, from kindergarten to high school.
As of August 16th, 2026, the Ministry's database lists 119 sites and 248 events in Seine-Saint-Denis across 30 municipalities. Organizers continue to register their activities until the opening; the program below will expand further by mid-September. One hundred events are linked to the theme of heritage in peril, and 20 to photography. Guided tours remain the dominant format (106 events), followed by workshops and craft demonstrations (33), shows and concerts (21), self-guided tours (20), exhibitions (18), tours and walks (18), lectures (13), games and quizzes (11), and screenings (8). Forty-three events are exceptional openings, and 67 are marked as accessible to people with disabilities, including a tour of the National Archives in French Sign Language.
What's new in the 2026 edition in the 93
The Cité du Cinéma in Saint-Denis has chosen this weekend for its grand inauguration, opening for free for two days with the Paris Dance Project in residence. The Seine-Saint-Denis Prefecture in Bobigny is open for its 55th anniversary: a 1971 building designed by Michel Folliasson and Jacques Binoux, inaugurated by Georges Pompidou. The "railway cathedrals" of La Plaine Saint-Denis, listed as historical monuments in 2004, are opening before their conversion into a hip-hop museum. The bicentenary of photography can be found both at the Departmental Archives in Bobigny, with a cyanotype workshop and a silver portrait workshop, and at the Louis Daquin cinema in Le Blanc-Mesnil.
Reservations
240 of the 248 events are free, but 128 require mandatory reservations and will only open for registration in late August or early September. Tours by the Department and Seine-Saint-Denis Tourisme are handled via the Explore Paris platform; the prefecture requires a copy of an ID card upon registration. The day-by-day, site-by-site program is published at journeesdupatrimoine.culture.gouv.fr, with filtering options by municipality.

European Heritage Days in Seine-Saint-Denis
On the third weekend of September, Seine-Saint-Denis takes part in the European Heritage Days. In a department often viewed primarily through an economic and social lens, these two days open up sites that many locals themselves have yet to discover.
Millennia of Heritage
The Basilica Cathedral of Saint-Denis is built over the tomb of Saint Denis, a missionary bishop who died around 250 AD. From the time of Dagobert until the 19th century, it served as the final resting place for 43 kings, 32 queens, and a dozen royal servants, housing the most significant collection of funerary sculptures in Europe dating from the 12th to the 16th century. The 12th-13th century structure is 108 meters long, with vaults reaching 29 meters in height and two rose windows over 12 meters in diameter that served as the model for Notre-Dame de Paris.
The 93 department also boasts an industrial heritage born of its working-class past: converted factories, railway halls, canals, and warehouses in La Plaine Saint-Denis. The garden cities of Stains, Drancy, Dugny, Le Pré-Saint-Gervais, and Romainville, built during the interwar period, document the social utopias of the 20th century. The Departmental Archives, housed in a contemporary building in Bobigny, preserve the records that trace the history of the region.
What to Visit
Municipalities, institutions, and associations open their doors to host themed tours: the royal necropolis and medieval garden of the basilica, museum reserves and restoration workshops, the memorials of Drancy and Bobigny, garden cities, the railway halls of La Plaine, artist studios, hospitals, the prefecture, and the archives. These are complemented by urban circuits and walking tours led by professional guides or the Department's heritage inventory officers.
For Children
Many venues offer activities for younger audiences, including activity booklets, scavenger hunts, creative workshops in archives and libraries, and giant dictation challenges. Several sites are marked as accessible to visitors with motor, auditory, visual, intellectual, or mental disabilities, and tours in French Sign Language are also available.
