The great living fresco of the Lot Valley
"Hier un Village" is a monumental sound and light show created in 1982 in Flagnac, in the Lot Valley in Aveyron. This great living fresco is performed by 250 volunteer actors and supported by around 600 volunteers. In front of 3000 spectators, the show retraces rural life of the past through the story of Jeannou, an old peasant from Rouergue, with a stage over 100 meters long, 600 projectors, video mapping, pyrotechnics, and special effects.
Born on a festive evening in 1982, "Hier un Village" has become over the decades one of the largest sound and light shows in France. Each summer, the village of Flagnac, nestled in a meander of the Lot in western Aveyron, transforms into an open-air theater where 250 volunteer actors bring to life a historical and moving fresco retracing rural life of the past.
The show tells the story of Jeannou, an old peasant from Rouergue who, at Marinou's, shares his memories with three children. Through his stories, scenes of village life come alive: field work, harvests, mine work, wars, votive and religious festivals, weddings, dances, departures, and reunions. An authentic emotion conveyed by carefully recreated period costumes.
The stage of over 100 meters hosts spectacular special effects: 600 projectors managed by local technicians, video mapping with three 20,000-lumen video projectors allowing the simulation of a castle collapsing and burning, snow falling, or wheat growing before your eyes. Pyrotechnics, water effects, and mobile set elements complete this grandiose staging lasting 1 hour and 45 minutes. The stands can accommodate up to 3000 spectators each evening.
Supported by around 600 volunteers β actors, technicians, seamstresses, hospitality, catering β "Hier un Village" is more than just a show: it is a true territorial project that unites an entire community around rural memory and heritage. After more than 40 years of existence, the show continues to renew itself while keeping its authenticity and emotion intact.
