The theatrical improvisation festival of Limoges
ImproFiesta is the unmissable event for theatrical improvisation in Haute-Vienne. Organized every year in May by the company La Balise at the Espace Noriac in Limoges, this festival brings together improvisation troupes from all over France and abroad for a week of shows, tournaments, and ephemeral creations. Since 2005, ImproFiesta has celebrated the art of improvisation in all its forms in a festive and friendly atmosphere.
Created in 2005 by the company La Balise, a historic theatrical improvisation troupe founded in 1980 in Limoges, the ImproFiesta festival has established itself as one of the major events in French-language improvisation. Every May, the Espace Noriac in Limoges buzzes with shows invented live in front of the audience, blending humor, emotion, and unbridled creativity.
The heart of the festival beats around an improvisation match tournament pitting four selected teams from the best French-speaking troupes against each other. From Wednesday to Friday, each evening features two one-hour matches where improvisers compete on themes proposed by the audience, following the rules inherited from the Improvisation League. Points accumulate through the rounds, leading to the grand final on Saturday evening where the winning team takes home the ImproFiesta trophy.
Beyond the tournament, ImproFiesta offers a rich and varied program. The festival traditionally opens with Les Naufragés de l'Imaginaire (The Castaways of the Imagination), an original concept invented by La Balise where two teams of five actors improvise on themes written by the audience upon arrival. The early week evenings highlight discoveries: Ça commence comme ça (It Starts Like This) showcases beginner improvisers, while a surprise show each year promises astonishment. For several editions now, a show dedicated to young audiences has completed the program.
Over the years, ImproFiesta has hosted the best French-speaking improvisation troupes: Les Ours dans ta baignoire (Paris), four-time tournament winners, the LISM (Melun), Old School, the FBI (French troupe from London), and Pen ar Bed from Brittany. La Balise, the host troupe with seven tournament victories, remains the soul of the festival with its thirty annual performances that attract over 3,000 spectators throughout the Limousin region.
Supported by the Departmental Council of Haute-Vienne as part of the Haute-Vienne en scènes program, ImproFiesta contributes to the cultural influence of Limoges and the democratization of improvisational theater. The festival offers accessible prices and is open to all audiences, from long-time enthusiasts to curious newcomers eager to discover this unique living art where each performance is an ephemeral and unrepeatable creation.
ImproFiesta returns for its 22nd edition from May 12 to 16, 2026, at the Espace Noriac in Limoges. A week of improvisation shows, tournaments, and live creations with the best French-speaking troupes.
