Bolivian art in the heart of Berry
The Journées Carrasco annually celebrate the work and universe of Jorge Carrasco, a Bolivian artist who created a monumental fresco of over 400 m² in the Notre-Dame du Menoux church. Organized on Pentecost weekend by the association Les Amis de Carrasco, these days offer guided tours of the church and the artist's house, painting and sculpture workshops, demonstrations of traditional Bolivian dances, Bolivian culinary tastings, and Latin American concerts in the exceptional setting of this church adorned by the Bolivian master.
The Journées Carrasco were born in 2006, after the death of Jorge Carrasco, a Bolivian artist born in La Paz in 1919 and settled in the Indre region from the 1960s. The artist dedicated eight years of his life, from 1968 to 1976, to creating a monumental fresco of over 400 m² covering the walls and vaults of the Notre-Dame du Menoux church, representing his vision of the creation of humanity and the universe. This unique work in France is an extraordinary testament to contemporary sacred art, blending Bolivian and European influences.
Each year, on the Pentecost weekend, the association Les Amis de Carrasco organizes two days of festivities open to all. The program includes guided tours of the church and the artist's house-studio, artistic workshops for painting and sculpture allowing visitors to immerse themselves in Carrasco's creative universe, as well as demonstrations of traditional Bolivian dances that liven up the village throughout the day.
The Journées Carrasco are also an invitation to a culinary journey, with tastings of Bolivian specialties prepared by passionate volunteers. The evenings are dedicated to concerts of Latin American music, held in the exceptional acoustics of the church decorated by Carrasco. Franco-Argentinian bands, Andean music ensembles, and world music artists take turns on stage, creating a musical bridge between Latin America and Berry.
Since their creation, the Journées Carrasco have brought together thousands of visitors each year to discover or rediscover the unique work of this Bolivian artist who chose Berry to create his masterpiece. The event contributes to the cultural influence of the village of Le Menoux and the preservation of the artistic heritage left by Jorge Carrasco. Workshops for children and outdoor activities make it a family-friendly and convivial event, open to all audiences.
