The Journées Médiévales de Brebotte: Living History in the Heart of Sundgau
In the small village of Brebotte (90140), nestled in the south of the Territoire de Belfort at the gateway to Alsatian Sundgau, a remarkable tradition has been preserving the memory of the Middle Ages for over 35 years. The Journées Médiévales de Brebotte, organized around the Musée de l'Artisanat (a half-timbered farmhouse from 1853, typical of the region), is one of the most renowned historical shows in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.
The Nocturnal Sound and Light Show
The highlight of the event is undoubtedly the nocturnal historical sound and light show presented in the evening at 10 PM (or at dusk). Each year, over 100 male and female extras in authentic medieval costumes bring to life an original historical narrative carefully staged. Classical and modern music, special effects, light shows, and a final pyromusical firework display make up a show lasting approximately 1.5 hours that leaves audiences speechless.
The 38th edition (2025) was themed around the "Black Knight", a heroic figure from Anglo-Saxon medieval literature, featuring knights, foot soldiers, and spectacular special effects. The 39th edition (2026) will present a new, original show in this historical saga.
The Medieval Village
On Friday and Saturday afternoons, from 1:30 PM to 6 PM, the site transforms into a lively medieval village. About ten costumed artisans showcase their skills: blacksmiths, potters, illuminators, wool carders, armorers… A medieval market offers the opportunity to purchase artisanal objects and historically inspired culinary specialties.
Equestrian Tournament and Falconry
At 3:30 PM, an equestrian and pedestrian tournament offers a spectacle of chivalry with jousts, sword fights, and carefully choreographed equestrian demonstrations. Falconry demonstrations are also offered, allowing visitors to observe these magnificent birds of prey in flight.
20 Workshops for Children
About twenty fun workshops for children are offered in the medieval village: medieval archery, calligraphy, period costume making, foam weapon handling, old board games… The youngest enthusiastically dive into the world of the Middle Ages.
An Exceptional Heritage Setting
The site of the Musée de l'Artisanat in Brebotte, with its listed half-timbered buildings, old stone walls, and timeless atmosphere, provides an ideal natural setting for this historical show. The association Vivre Ensemble, organizer of the festival, has been dedicated for decades to the quality of the show and the promotion of local heritage.
