L'Archipel fait son Cirque: Contemporary Circus at Perpignan's National Theatre
L'Archipel fait son Cirque is the highlight dedicated to circus arts in the programming of the Théâtre de l'Archipel, a national theatre in Perpignan. Each year, between April and May, this event offers a demanding and creative program of contemporary circus, bringing together nationally and internationally renowned companies.
A Reinvented Circus
The circus presented by L'Archipel is a circus of creation, pushing the boundaries between disciplines. The performances mix acrobatics, juggling, dance, theatre, and poetry, offering works where the body is at the center of the narrative. Far from traditional circus, these creations question our relationship with the world, risk, and the beauty of gesture.
A Varied and Audacious Program
Previous editions of L'Archipel fait son Cirque have hosted remarkable performances. The 2025 edition featured "Le Malade Imaginé" by Philippe Car / Agence de Voyage Imaginaire, a circus-like and delirious adaptation of the famous Molière, performed over 600 times worldwide. The 2025-2026 edition also includes "Kintsugi" by Machine de Cirque, "1978" by Hugues Amsler, and "Nos Matins Intérieurs" by Nicolas Mathis.
Théâtre de l'Archipel: A Setting for Circus
The Théâtre de l'Archipel, designed by architect Jean Nouvel, has several spaces suitable for circus arts, notably Le Carré, a modular space ideal for intimate performances. Its multidisciplinary programming makes L'Archipel a reference point for the performing arts in the South of France.
