The Royal Wedding of 1287

In 1287, the town of Mauléon-Licharre, in Soule, was the scene of a prestigious royal wedding between the courts of England and Aragon. This major historical event, which brought together the greatest lords of the time in Mauléon, is the inspiration for the Great Medieval Festival, which recreates the splendor of this exceptional day every summer.

A Spectacular Historical Fresco

The Great Medieval Festival unfolds a spectacular historical fresco in the streets and squares of Mauléon-Licharre. Over 150 costumed actors, accompanied by equestrian troupes, form a grandiose procession that recreates the wedding parade of 1287. The dialogues and rituals, faithful to the medieval period, are performed on a historical stage where the royal wedding is re-enacted with its pomp and traditions.

The Parade in the Medieval Town

In the afternoon, the historical parade travels through the town center of Mauléon-Licharre. The extras in period costumes, knights in armor, court ladies, troubadours, and jugglers, take the audience on a striking journey through time. The town streets, dominated by the imposing silhouette of the fortified castle, offer a perfect natural setting for this medieval recreation.

Jousts, Combats, and Banquet at the Fortified Castle

In the evening, the festivities continue at the fortified castle of Mauléon. Equestrian jousts and combat demonstrations offer a thrilling spectacle in the castle courtyard. Visitors can participate in medieval games, enjoy traditional songs and dances, and dine at the medieval banquet under a marquee or at the Navarrese tavern. Banquet reservations can be made with the Soule Tourist Office.

Immersive Animations and Medieval Crafts

Throughout the day, immersive animations immerse visitors in the atmosphere of the 13th century. Medieval craft workshops offer demonstrations of blacksmithing, calligraphy, candle and rope making, leatherworking, and pouch making. Children can try their hand at ancient games, archery, and medieval trades in dedicated areas.

Mauléon-Licharre, Capital of Soule

Mauléon-Licharre (Maule-Lextarre in Basque), the historic capital of Soule, the smallest province of the Basque Country, boasts remarkable architectural heritage to host this medieval festival. Its fortified castle, perched on a promontory overlooking the town and the Saison valley, provides an exceptional setting for the evening festivities, offering a panoramic view of the Pyrenees.
