Trail and sporty and festive festival around the legend of the dragon of Metz
The La Légende du Graoully Festival is a sporting and festive event held annually in April in Woippy, near Metz. Inspired by the legendary creature that terrorized the Moselle before being vanquished by Saint Clément, the first bishop of Metz, the festival offers trail races from 12 to 47 kilometers, sports initiations for children (Kids Graoully), live concerts, a fireworks display, and a popular festive atmosphere. This unique event combines sport, local legend, and conviviality in a family-friendly spirit.
The Festival La Légende du Graoully draws its inspiration from one of Metz's most famous legends: that of the Graoully, a monstrous dragon that lived in the Roman amphitheaters and terrorized the city's inhabitants. According to tradition, Saint Clément, the first bishop of Metz, defeated the creature and threw it into the Seille river. It is this legend that gives this sporting and festive festival its unique flavor.
At the heart of the festival are the trail races that take runners along the rolling paths around Woippy and the Metz metropolitan area. Several distances are offered, from 12 to 47 kilometers, allowing everyone to find their challenge. The routes cross varied landscapes—forests, vineyards, and hillsides—offering remarkable views of Metz and its cathedral.
In addition to the main festival in April, a night trail called "La Légende du Graoully By Night" is held in October. This night race adds a mysterious and immersive dimension, with runners setting off in the dark in the footsteps of the legendary dragon, headlamp in hand.
The festival places great importance on children with the Kids Graoully program. Various sports initiations are offered to the youngest: obstacle courses, adapted races, trail discovery workshops, and fun activities. The goal is to instill in children a taste for sport and self-improvement in a supportive atmosphere.
Beyond sport, the La Légende du Graoully Festival is a true festive event. Live concerts liven up the evenings, creating an energetic musical atmosphere. A spectacular fireworks display lights up the Woippy sky, recalling the legendary dragon's fiery breath. Food stalls offer local specialties and drinks to refuel after the effort.
Woippy, a commune in the Metz metropolitan area, offers an ideal playground for this festival. Its natural spaces, its hillsides covered with vines, and its proximity to the center of Metz make it a perfect starting point for trails with varied and surprising landscapes.
