Hurdy-gurdy festival in Jenzat, world capital of hurdy-gurdy making
Every summer, La Ronde des Vielles celebrates the exceptional heritage of the hurdy-gurdy in Jenzat, Allier. This village in Bourbonnais, recognized as the world capital of hurdy-gurdy making, has perpetuated a unique instrument-making tradition since 1795. The festival features visits to luthiers' workshops, musical processions through the village streets, traditional music concerts, and instrument-making demonstrations. Organized with the support of the Maison du Luthier and the association Les Amis de la Vielle, it attracts musicians, instrument makers, and traditional music enthusiasts.
Every summer, the village of Jenzat, nestled in the heart of Bourbonnais in the Allier department, comes alive with the sound of the hurdy-gurdy during La Ronde des Vielles. This unique festival pays tribute to an exceptional artisanal heritage: since 1795, Jenzat has been the cradle of hurdy-gurdy making, and the village is recognized as the world capital of the hurdy-gurdy.
The history of instrument making in Jenzat dates back to the late 18th century. In the 19th century, the village had up to eight workshops operating simultaneously, and around 25 families earned their living making hurdy-gurdies and bagpipes. Approximately 40,000 hurdy-gurdies were manufactured in Jenzat over the generations. Renowned luthiers such as Pajot Fils, Pajot Jeune, Tixier, Pimpard, Decante, and Nigout contributed to the village's international reputation.
The Maison du Luthier / Museum, housed in the former residence of Jacques Antoine Pajot (1845-1920) in the heart of the historic luthiers' quarter, preserves and passes on this exceptional heritage. It features a remarkable collection of hurdy-gurdies, bagpipes, and luthier tools, a reconstructed workshop, an auditorium with documentary films, and temporary exhibitions.
La Ronde des Vielles offers a total immersion into the world of the hurdy-gurdy. Visitors wander through the village, following musical processions led by musicians playing traditional repertoires from Auvergne, Bourbonnais, Morvan, and other French regions. Visits to luthiers' workshops allow attendees to discover the techniques and secrets of crafting this ancient instrument.
Traditional music concerts punctuate the day, bringing together hurdy-gurdy players, bagpipers, and accordionists to perform repertoires from central France. Instrument-making demonstrations and lectures on the history of the hurdy-gurdy complete the program, offering a rich and authentic experience to the curious and the connoisseurs alike.
Each year, La Ronde des Vielles attracts musicians, instrument makers, and enthusiasts from all over France and Europe. The event contributes to the preservation and transmission of precious intangible heritage, while also boosting the cultural and tourist dynamism of the Val de Sioule. Visitors can extend their discovery by visiting the Maison du Luthier, open throughout the summer season.
La Ronde des Vielles returns to Jenzat in the summer of 2026 to celebrate the hurdy-gurdy in the heart of its world capital. Musical processions, visits to luthiers' workshops, and traditional music concerts are on the program.
La Ronde des Vielles returns to Jenzat for a new edition in the summer of 2026. The village, the historic cradle of hurdy-gurdy making, will once again host musicians and luthiers for a day of musical processions, workshop visits, and traditional music concerts.
The temporary exhibition "Le Tour de France de la Vielle", presented from June 13 to September 27, 2026, at the Maison du Luthier, will retrace the major stages of hurdy-gurdy making in France, from Louis XV to the present day. The Tradimardis will offer musical encounters with traditional musicians every Tuesday in July and August.
