The grand celebration of wines and gastronomy in the Saint-Pourcinois region
Every summer in August, the Viticole et Gourmand Festival enlivens the Saint-Pourcinois region in the Allier for eleven days, focusing on AOC Saint-Pourçain wines and local gastronomy. Created in 2006, this unifying event offers over 70 activities throughout the wine-growing area: tastings, producer markets, horse, bike, and walking tours, concerts, shows, treasure hunts, children's activities, and the grand final parade through the streets of Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule. A friendly and festive gathering celebrating the Bourbonnais art de vivre.
The Saint-Pourçain vineyard is one of the oldest in France. Cultivated since the Gallo-Roman era, it reached its peak in the Middle Ages when its wines graced royal and papal tables. Located in the heart of the Val de Sioule, in the Allier department, this vineyard has held its Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) status since 2009. Local grape varieties, particularly tressallier (an endemic white grape) and gamay, produce red, white, and rosé wines with a distinct character, reflecting a unique Auvergne terroir.
The Viticole et Gourmand Festival was launched in August 2006, initiated by the association Fêtes et Animations and the Communauté de Communes Saint-Pourçain Sioule Limagne. The ambition was to create a unifying celebration across the entire community, bringing together all the communes of the Saint-Pourcinois region around their wine and gastronomic riches. From 28 activities offered in the first edition, the program now features over 70, demonstrating remarkable growth and increasing popular enthusiasm.
For eleven days, the festival unfolds a rich and varied program throughout the Saint-Pourcinois wine-growing area. Visitors can participate in AOC Saint-Pourçain wine tastings at the winemakers' estates, discover the local producer markets, attend culinary competitions and gastronomic demonstrations, embark on horseback, cycling, and walking tours through the vineyards and the landscapes of the Val de Sioule, enjoy open-air concerts and shows, or have fun with the family through treasure hunts and children's activities.
The highlight of the festival is the grand parade, a spectacular procession of decorated floats and brass bands that winds through the town center of Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule on the final weekend. This festive and colorful event attracts a large audience each year and marks the festival's grand closing. The friendly and good-natured atmosphere that prevails throughout these eleven days makes this festival an authentic celebration of the Bourbonnais art de vivre, where conviviality and good humor blend with oenology and gastronomy.
Beyond the festivities, the Viticole et Gourmand Festival is an invitation to discover the remarkable heritage of the Saint-Pourcinois region: the Romanesque church of Sainte-Croix, the Vine Museum, the cellars of independent winemakers, the rolling landscapes of the Val de Sioule, and the charming villages of this Auvergne terroir. A fireworks display concludes the festivities in a warm and memorable atmosphere.
