About Charroux Soup Festival

Every first Saturday of November, the medieval village of Charroux in the Allier, classified as one of France's Most Beautiful Villages, hosts its Soup Festival. Since 2007, residents and restaurateurs have offered about forty artisanal soups to taste in the cobbled alleys and vaulted passageways of the town. The concept is friendly: each visitor buys a stoneware bowl made by a local potter, then freely tastes all the soups at the doorsteps. Around 2,500 participants gather each year for this gourmet evening.

Charroux: a medieval setting for a gourmet festival

Charroux, a small medieval town in Bourbonnais classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, offers an exceptional setting for this autumn festival. Its cobbled streets, its half-timbered and stone houses, its vaulted passageways, and its Clock Gate form an enchanting backdrop for strolling from door to door to discover artisanal soups. The village, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Sioule plain, preserves a remarkable architectural heritage that lends itself wonderfully to this popular and friendly festival.

A simple and generous concept born in 2007

The Soup Festival was created in 2007 by the inhabitants of Charroux with a very simple idea: "What if we ate soup!" The principle has remained true to the original spirit: each visitor begins by purchasing a handmade stoneware bowl, specially made for the occasion by Nathalie Nyault, a potter based in Charroux. This bowl, which serves as the entry pass, then becomes a souvenir of the evening. With their bowl in hand, visitors freely explore the village and taste to their heart's content the forty soups offered by residents and restaurateurs, each at their doorstep.

A thousand and one ways to make soup

One of the charms of this festival lies in the extraordinary variety of recipes. Because, as the organizers remind us, "there are a thousand and one ways to make soup." Traditional Bourbonnais vegetable soups from the garden, refined veloutés, exotic soups, original recipes, and bold creations mingle in a joyful diversity. Each participant prepares their soup with love and pride, competing in inventiveness and know-how. Seasonal Bourbonnais vegetables (pumpkins, leeks, carrots, turnips, chestnuts) are featured, highlighting local produce and traditional culinary expertise.

A friendly and warm evening

The Soup Festival takes place in the evening, on the first Saturday of November, creating a particularly warm atmosphere in the illuminated alleys of the medieval village. The distribution of bowls begins in the late afternoon, and the soup tasting starts at 7 PM. Approximately 2,500 participants gather each year for this evening where conviviality and sharing are the watchwords. The event continues with a festive "after-soup" gathering, extending the evening in a musical and dancing atmosphere.

An event rooted in the Bourbonnais terroir

Beyond the tasting, the Soup Festival is an opportunity to discover or rediscover the exceptional heritage of Charroux and to meet its inhabitants. Artisans, shopkeepers, and residents open their doors and share their culinary passion with visitors. This popular and participatory event illustrates the spirit of solidarity and conviviality that animates this Bourbonnais village, and helps to keep an ancestral culinary tradition alive in an exceptional heritage setting.
