About Le Grand Festival

Le Grand Festival de Verdun is a major street arts event organized by the Communauté d'Agglomération du Grand Verdun. For three days in July, the city transforms into an open-air theater where about forty companies offer a hundred completely free performances. Le Grand Festival: When Verdun Becomes an Open-Air Theater

Created by the Communauté d'Agglomération du Grand Verdun, Le Grand Festival has established itself in a few editions as one of the unmissable street arts events in the Grand Est region. Every summer, for three days in July, the Meuse city transforms into a vast open-air stage where French and international companies take over the city center and its surroundings to offer the public a dense and eclectic program, entirely free.

A Rich and Multidisciplinary Program

Le Grand Festival offers an ambitious program bringing together more than forty companies and artists from France, Italy, Spain, Morocco, and elsewhere. The hundred performances cover a wide spectrum of live arts:

  • Contemporary circus and aerial acrobatics: the evening's major shows, presented outdoors, are the highlights of each day. Acrobats sometimes perform more than fifteen meters high, offering spectacular visual displays accessible to thousands of spectators.
  • Street theater: from itinerant theater to short plays performed from square to square, companies take over public spaces to surprise and engage passersby.
  • Dance and performances: contemporary dance, hip-hop, physical performances, and participatory choreographies punctuate the three days of the festival.
  • Music and concerts: itinerant brass bands, acoustic concerts, and electro sets accompany spectators as they wander through the city.
  • Puppetry, installations, and workshops: the Petit Festival, a program dedicated to children at Château Couten, offers artistic workshops, puppet shows, and interactive installations.

A Philosophy of Cultural Democratization

The philosophy of Le Grand Festival is based on the conviction that street arts help to overcome the social barriers of intimidation that keep some audiences away from traditional cultural venues. As the organizers recall, quoting Victor Hugo, "the street is the umbilical cord that connects the individual to society." By taking over public spaces, the festival reaches a diverse audience, far beyond the usual circles of spectators, and transforms every passerby into a spectator-actor in a shared collective experience.

Strong Territorial Roots

Beyond the three days of shows, Le Grand Festival develops preparatory actions: street artist residencies, participatory workshops with local social centers, collaborations with residents and local associations. Three companies from the Meuse region are systematically included in the program, strengthening the link between the festival and its host territory. These actions help to weave a lasting dialogue between artistic creation and the daily life of Verdun residents.

Iconic Verdun Locations Featured

The festival unfolds in numerous sites in the city center and its outskirts: the Quai de la République hosts the Festival Village, while performances are spread across the Place de la Nation, Parc Japiot, Parc de Londres, Jardin du Musée de la Princerie, Promenade de la Digue, Château Couten, and the Quais de la Meuse. This geographical dispersion invites festival-goers to wander through the city and rediscover its public spaces in a new light.

Growing Popular Success

Since its creation, Le Grand Festival has continued to grow. The first edition attracted around 62,000 spectators; subsequent editions have seen this attendance increase steadily to over 82,000 visitors, making the festival a real driver of tourist attraction for Verdun and the Meuse department. The event now attracts festival-goers from neighboring departments and even from abroad, particularly from Luxembourg, Belgium, and Germany.
