The music eco-festival in the heart of the Chartreuse massif
Founded in 1988 under the name Rencontres Brel, Le Grand Son is an eco-festival of French-language songs and contemporary music nestled at 900 meters altitude in Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse, in the heart of the Chartreuse Regional Natural Park. Renamed in 2017 in reference to the Grand Som, an emblematic summit of the massif, this human-sized festival brings together nearly 14,000 spectators and over 300 volunteers each year around an eclectic program mixing French chanson, rock, world music, and electro, with a pioneering commitment to eco-responsibility and sound quality.
Le Grand Son is a unique music festival, established in 1988 in Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse, the small capital of the Chartreuse massif, at 900 meters altitude in the Isère department. Formerly known as Rencontres Brel, it was founded by the association L'Éphémère in the spirit of the great Jacques Brel, celebrating living and committed French-language chanson.
For nearly thirty years, Rencontres Brel highlighted author-composer French chanson in an exceptional natural setting. In 2017, for its 30th edition, the festival underwent a decisive shift by adopting the name Le Grand Son. This new name refers to the Grand Som, a summit culminating at 2,026 meters that overlooks the village, but also to the festival's commitment to improving acoustic conditions and reducing sound levels. The programming then broadened significantly to include contemporary music, rock, electro, and world music, while retaining its core of French-language chanson.
Le Grand Son has established itself as one of the national leaders in eco-festivals. Located in the heart of the Chartreuse Regional Natural Park, in a preserved mid-mountain environment, the festival has developed an ambitious environmental approach: waste management, short supply chains for catering, reducing the carbon footprint, raising public awareness about nature protection, and exemplary control of sound levels to respect the surrounding fauna and flora.
Over the years, Le Grand Son has hosted top artists such as Vianney, Grand Corps Malade, Zaz, Dub Inc, Trust, Arno, Hugues Aufray, Pomme, Gauvain Sers, Suzane, Naâman, Hilight Tribe, Hyphen Hyphen, Les Fatals Picards, KKC Orchestra, Debout sur le Zinc, and the Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club. The festival also offered theatrical creations, an off-festival in the village streets, workshops for children (theater, sculpture), and meet-and-greets with artists.
With approximately 14,000 spectators per edition and a team of over 300 volunteers, Le Grand Son fostered the spirit of a human-sized, warm, and friendly festival. Concerts took place under a big top and outdoors, in various locations within the village: the Église Saint-Hugues, the Grange de la Correrie, a yurt, and the village hall, offering an intimate and immersive musical experience amidst the mountains.
The 2026 edition of Le Grand Son will once again take over Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse for four days of music in the mountains. The Chartreuse eco-festival continues its mission to offer a bold and eclectic program, mixing French chanson, rock, electro, and world music, while respecting its exceptional natural environment in the heart of the Chartreuse Regional Natural Park.
Le Grand Son returns from July 16th to 19th, 2026 in Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse for a new edition of the Chartreuse eco-festival. At the foot of the Grand Som (2,026 m), the festival unfolds its four-day program in various locations within the village, from the main big top to the outdoor stages.
This edition aligns with the festival's historical commitment to eco-responsibility. Controlling sound levels, promoting short supply chains, and raising public awareness about the preservation of the Chartreuse massif remain central to the project.
The program mixes headliners from the French scene and musical discoveries, spanning genres from French chanson to rock, and electro to world music. As every year, the off-festival offers free concerts in the village streets, street performances, theatrical creations, and artistic workshops for children.
Le Grand Son confirms its unique place in the French festival landscape: a human-sized event, rooted in its mountain territory, driven by the energy of over 300 volunteers and the loyalty of an audience of 14,000 festival-goers.
