The grand literary fair of Châteauroux, in the heart of the Couvent des Cordeliers
Created in 2006, L'Envolée des Livres is the unmissable literary fair in Châteauroux, organized every year at the end of April by Châteauroux Métropole. For two days, the Couvent des Cordeliers and the Saint-Martial church host over 130 authors, publishers, booksellers, and associations. Meetings, signings, round tables, readings, and workshops make this free event a major event for lovers of literature in Berry.
Each year, at the end of April, L'Envolée des Livres transforms the magnificent Couvent des Cordeliers in Châteauroux into a true temple of literature. Created in 2006 by the City of Châteauroux, this book fair has established itself over the years as one of the major cultural events in the Indre department and the Centre-Val de Loire region.
L'Envolée des Livres brings together over 130 authors each year from all literary genres: novels, comics, children's literature, thrillers, poetry, essays, humanities, and travel writing. Visitors can meet the writers, get their books signed, attend round tables and conferences led by journalists and literary critics. Each edition is sponsored by a renowned author: in 2025, it is the international star Douglas Kennedy who has accepted this prestigious role.
The Couvent des Cordeliers, founded in the 13th century by the Franciscans, offers a remarkable heritage setting for this literary event. Its vaulted rooms, cloister, and terrace gardens overlooking the Indre valley create an atmosphere conducive to discovery and exchange. The nearby Saint-Martial church also hosts part of the program, allowing the fair to extend over a large area in the heart of the city.
Beyond the book signing sessions, L'Envolée des Livres offers a rich and varied program. Writing and illustration workshops are organized for children and adults. Readings aloud and literary performances punctuate the two days. Independent bookstores and publishing houses have stands where visitors can discover the latest releases and booksellers' favorites. Thematic meetings allow for in-depth discussions on various topics, from literary news to societal issues addressed in books.
Admission to the fair is completely free, in line with the organizers' desire to make literature accessible to all. This free admission, combined with the quality of the program and the reputation of the invited authors, attracts several thousand visitors each year, making L'Envolée des Livres a special moment for sharing and literary discovery in Berry.
