A show born in 2019 at Château d'Ars
Les Médiévales d'Ars was a sound and light show held on the grounds of the Château d'Ars in Lourouer-Saint-Laurent, just a few kilometers from La Châtre. Organized by the City of La Châtre in partnership with the Compagnie Eldora, and supported by the Centre-Val de Loire Region and the Indre Department, it brought the medieval history of the local area to life through a production blending theater, music, lighting effects, and pyrotechnics. The inaugural edition took place on August 16 and 17, 2019.
Staging the medieval history of Berry
The show featured a dozen scenes tracing major episodes in the history of the La Châtre region during the Middle Ages: the Black Death that ravaged La Châtre, battles of the Hundred Years' War, the adventures of the lords of Ars and Sarzay, local folklore, the work of stonemasons and tanners in the time of Jacques Cœur, and the lives of the monks from the abbaye de Varennes. More than 120 volunteers and performers in hand-stitched costumes carried the performance, accompanied by an immersive soundtrack. Historian Vincent Portier, a member of the Fédération des Routes de la Guerre de Cent Ans, provided historical guidance.
A medieval camp in the castle park
Before the performance, the Château d'Ars park opened at 6:00 PM, featuring a reconstructed medieval camp, an artisanal market, food stalls, traditional games, children's activities, knightly combat, falconry demonstrations, and medieval music concerts. The open-air show began at 9:00 PM and concluded with a fireworks display illuminating the castle walls.
A collective adventure cut short
The event was an immediate success upon its launch, with performances selling out days in advance. The medieval sets were built entirely by carpentry students from the La Châtre high school. The event was not renewed after 2019; the Pays de George Sand Tourist Office indicates it has not existed since 2020, and there are no reports of any subsequent editions.
The Château d'Ars remains a venue for other cultural events.
