Les Médiévales d'Ars are a large-scale sound and light show that takes place in the majestic setting of the Château d'Ars, located in Lourouer-Saint-Laurent, a few kilometers from La Châtre. Organized by the City of La Châtre in partnership with the Compagnie Eldora and with the support of the Centre-Val de Loire Region and the Department of Indre, this show brings medieval history of the Castelchâtrain region back to life through a spectacular staging combining theater, music, light effects, and pyrotechnics.
The show consists of about ten scenes retracing the major episodes of the history of the La Châtre region in the Middle Ages. Spectators relive the Black Death that ravaged La Châtre, the battles of the Hundred Years' War between the French and the English, the adventures of the lords of Ars and Sarzay, popular beliefs, the work of stonemasons and tanners in the time of Jacques Cœur, and the life of the monks of the Varennes abbey. All this is brought to life by over 120 volunteers and extras, dressed in handmade costumes, and accompanied by an immersive soundtrack. Historian Vincent Portier, a member of the Hundred Years' War Routes Federation, provides historical advice.
Before the show, the park of Château d'Ars opens its doors at 6 PM for an immersion into the Middle Ages. A recreated medieval encampment allows visitors to discover the trades and daily life of the era. An artisan market offers medieval-inspired items, while food stalls provide refreshments before the show. Old games and activities for children liven up the park. Knight combats and falconry demonstrations complete the program. Medieval music concerts create the atmosphere.
The open-air show begins at 9 PM and concludes with a magnificent fireworks display that illuminates the facades of Château d'Ars. The event was an immediate success from its creation in 2019, with performances selling out days in advance. The medieval sets were entirely built by the carpentry students from the La Châtre high school, demonstrating the collective and unifying dimension of this cultural adventure.
