Grand medieval festival with parade, medieval village and feast in Mazeres in Ariege
Les Medievales de Mazeres are one of the largest and oldest medieval festivals in the South of France. Organized every year on the first weekend of August in Mazeres, in Ariege, they have commemorated since 1991 the treaty signed between King Charles VI of France and Count Gaston Febus of Foix-Béarn, who had invited the king and his entire court to Mazeres. The event features a medieval village and market, an arms camp, a grand parade of 300 to 400 costumed participants and horsemen in the town streets, an equestrian and jester show, and an 8-course medieval feast under the Halle. Admission is free, making the Medievales a popular and accessible event for everyone.
The Medievales de Mazeres were born in 1991 to celebrate the 600th anniversary of a historic treaty signed between the King of France Charles VI and the Count of Foix-Béarn Gaston III known as Febus. In 1390, Gaston Febus had invited Charles VI and his entire court to Mazeres, over a thousand people, to seal this peace treaty. It is this grand event that the Medievales bring back to life each year, transporting visitors to the heart of the Middle Ages in this small historic town in Ariege.
The highlight of the show is the grand medieval parade which takes place on Saturday and Sunday at 5 PM in the streets of Mazeres. 300 to 400 participants in period costumes and 50 horsemen parade in a colorful procession: lords, ladies, knights, men-at-arms, monks, artisans, peasants, and jesters animate a cortege that recreates the splendor of Gaston Febus's court welcoming the King of France. Residents of Mazeres and volunteers are invited to dress up to participate in the parade, reinforcing the historical immersion and the participatory dimension of the event.
Throughout the weekend, a medieval village and market is set up in the center of Mazeres. Artisans — blacksmiths, potters, tanners, calligraphers — present their ancestral skills. A medieval camp recreates the daily life of an arms camp with fencing demonstrations, archery, and knight equipment displays. The show "Le Comte Aventureux", on the church square, combines equestrian games and jester feats for a striking moment of live entertainment. A inn, a tavern, and a rotisserie offer medieval-inspired food.
One of the most popular moments of the Medievales is the medieval feast, organized on Saturday evening under the Halle in Mazeres. This exceptional meal offers 8 courses inspired by medieval cuisine, served by costumed participants, all punctuated by shows and entertainment between courses. The 400 guests are invited to dress up for total immersion in the medieval atmosphere. Reservations are mandatory and places sell out quickly, testifying to the popularity of this unique gastronomic experience.
The 35th edition of Les Medievales de Mazeres is confirmed for the first weekend of August 2026 (August 1 and 2). Medieval village and market, arms camp, grand parade, equestrian show, and medieval feast are on the program. Free admission.
