Classical music concerts in the heritage sites of Saint-Flour
Perched at an altitude of 880 meters on a basalt spur that the Romans called Indiciacum, the city of Saint-Flour offers an exceptional heritage setting for classical music. It is in this crucible of volcanic stones that the association Musik'Art Cantal created Les Nuits d'Indiciac in 2022, a festival of summer concerts that creates a dialogue between the great works of the classical repertoire and the secular architecture of the upper town.
The association Musik'Art Cantal, founded in April 2005 by Éric Régis and Father Philippe Boyer, has pursued an ambitious mission for two decades: to disseminate classical music in Cantal, a rural area where opportunities to hear high-level concerts are rare. After years of musical seasons organized in the churches and heritage sites of the department, the association took a leap forward in 2022 by launching Les Nuits d'Indiciac, a true festival concentrated over a weekend in July in Saint-Flour. This project was born in close partnership with the municipality of Saint-Flour, which provides its most beautiful heritage sites.
The uniqueness of Les Nuits d'Indiciac lies in the quality of the venues that host the concerts. The chapel of the Grand Séminaire, a neo-Gothic gem rebuilt in 1868 by architect Aygueparsse, offers an intimate acoustic ideal for piano and chamber music recitals. The courtyard of the town hall, open to the starry sky and adjacent to the cathedral, allows for open-air concerts in a remarkable architectural setting. Finally, the Saint-Pierre cathedral, a 15th-century Gothic monument whose organ resonates under majestic vaults, hosts organ recitals and sacred music. This itinerancy within the upper town transforms each evening into a musical and heritage experience.
Since its creation, the festival has attracted nationally and internationally renowned performers. The first edition, in July 2022, brought together six young musicians around a Steinway piano for six concerts featuring piano, flute, cello, and voice. The 2023 edition expanded its ambition with fourteen artists and seven events over nine days, exploring a repertoire ranging from Bach to Messiaen with piano, baroque violin, harpsichord, viola da gamba, cello, and organ. The festival favors intimate formats – solo recitals, duos, trios – which allow for rare proximity between musicians and the audience.
Les Nuits d'Indiciac are fully integrated into the cultural life of Saint-Flour and Cantal. The festival contributes to the valorization of Saint-Flour's heritage by opening sometimes little-known places to the public and giving them a new cultural dimension. It also participates in the tourist appeal of the episcopal city during the summer season. With accessible prices and free admission for under-18s, the festival ensures that classical music is open to all, true to the original mission of the Musik'Art Cantal association to disseminate music in rural areas.
In just four editions, Les Nuits d'Indiciac has established itself as an unmissable event for classical music in Auvergne. Each year, the festival gains notoriety and ambition, attracting ever more prestigious soloists while retaining the intimate and warm spirit that makes it charming. The name Indiciac, referring to the oldest origins of Saint-Flour, carries the promise of a festival rooted in history but resolutely focused on the future of live music.
5th edition of Les Nuits d'Indiciac in Saint-Flour, from Friday, July 24 to Sunday, July 26, 2026. Three classical music concerts in the heritage sites of the upper town: organ recital at Saint-Pierre Cathedral, harpsichord stroll in the town hall courtyard, and a trio featuring Rameau at the Grand Séminaire Chapel.
For their 5th edition, Les Nuits d'Indiciac offer a weekend of three classical music concerts in the emblematic heritage sites of Saint-Flour's upper town, faithful to their formula of spreading classical music in Cantal, supported by the Musik'Art Cantal association.
The 2026 edition highlights French music and early instrument making: an organ recital at Saint-Pierre Cathedral, a meeting of two harpsichords exploring musical Europe of the 16th and 17th centuries, and an instrumental trio featuring Jean-Philippe Rameau's Pièces de Clavecin en Concerts.
The concerts take place in three heritage sites in the upper town of Saint-Flour:
Saint-Flour is located in the Cantal department (15), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
Booking recommended on the Musik'Art Cantal website or by phone. Limited seating in the Chapel of the Grand Séminaire. Tickets also available on-site on the evening of the concert.
