Alègre Médiéval: The Middle Ages in the Heart of a Petite Cité de Caractère
Since 1994, the Fêtes Médiévales d'Allègre, commonly known as Alègre Médiéval, have revived the Middle Ages in one of Haute-Loire's most beautiful villages. Classified as a Petite Cité de Caractère, Allègre offers an exceptional setting for this historical reenactment: medieval streets, the Marchédial square, and especially the spectacular ruins of the 14th-century feudal castle, whose famous Potence — a listed Historic Monument since 1935 — dominates the village from the top of the Baury volcano.
Born in a context of local economic decline, after the loss of industry and the large livestock market that animated the Marchédial square, the medieval festival was created by volunteers eager to bring the village back to life by leveraging its exceptional historical heritage. Over the years, the event has become more structured and professional, turning into a must-attend summer event in Haute-Loire.
A Rich Program of Medieval Entertainment
For two days, Allègre transforms into a true medieval city. The program, entirely free and family-friendly, offers a multitude of activities:
- Medieval Encampments: Camp life with cauldron cooking, craft demonstrations (calligraphy, basket weaving, blacksmithing), archery, and weapon and armor displays.
- Fights and Shows: Gate attacks, knighting ceremonies, knight fights, historical reenactments by specialized troupes.
- Street Arts: Jesters, stilt walkers, musicians, storytellers, jugglers, and fire-eaters animate the village streets.
- Artisan and Medieval Market: Artisans and merchants offer period objects, costumes, and food throughout the weekend.
- Conferences and Culture: Presentations by the Association des Amis d'Allègre on themes related to the Middle Ages and local history.
Festival Highlights
Among the key moments of each edition:
- Opening by Cannon Fire: A solemn signal marking the start of the festivities.
- Medieval Troupe Shows: Companies from all over France offering fights, music, dances, and theatrical performances (Les Goliards, La Garde du Cerf Ailé, L'Auberge des Poissards, La Corne Percée, among others).
- The Grand Medieval Banquet: Saturday evening from 7 PM, a convivial meal with Puy lentils and sausage, followed by a fire show.
- Period Ball: A dancing evening concluding the first day.
- Candy Throws by Trebuchet: A festive moment particularly enjoyed by children.
An Event Driven by Volunteer Passion
The Alègre Médiéval association, a non-profit organization (law 1901), is the driving force behind this event. Composed of local volunteers from Allègre and medieval history enthusiasts, it coordinates the entire organization: programming troupes, setting up encampments, managing the artisan market, and animating the village. The municipality of Allègre and institutional partners (Communauté d'Agglomération du Puy-en-Velay, Département de la Haute-Loire) support the event, which contributes to the tourist appeal of this remarkable village at the gates of the Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park.
