The Apricot of Ventoux, Golden Fruit of the Provençal Summer

In the Comtat Venaissin plain, at the foot of Mont Ventoux, the apricot reigns supreme as the summer fruit. Apricot orchards stretch as far as the eye can see between Le Barroux, Malaucène, Entrechaux, and Suzette, their branches laden with small orange suns that ripen slowly under the Provençal sun of June and July. The Ventoux apricot benefits from an exceptional terroir: well-drained calcareous and silty soils, intense sunshine, and the Mistral wind that purifies the air and promotes perfect fruit maturation.

The varieties cultivated in Le Barroux and its surroundings include the Bergeron, the queen of apricots, sweet and fragrant with its firm, orange flesh; the early and very sweet Rouge du Roussillon; the tart and juicy Polonais; and the late and very fragrant Lambertin. These apricots, picked at full ripeness—unlike those harvested green for supermarkets—have an incomparable flavor that fully justifies a trip to the apricot orchards of Le Barroux.

Le Barroux, a Village Under the Gaze of the Castle

Le Barroux is one of the most beautiful villages in the Dentelles de Montmirail, at the crossroads between the Ventoux massif and the Pays de Vaison-la-Romaine. The village is dominated by its Renaissance castle (12th-16th century), a former residence of the lords of Les Baux and later the counts of Provence, whose imposing silhouette and crenellated towers stand out against the blue Provençal sky. The castle, a listed historic monument, has been fully restored and is open for visits during the summer season.

The village itself is a delight: paved alleys leading up to the castle, blonde local stone houses, a central fountain shaded by plane trees, an old bread oven, and the 17th-century Saint-Sauveur church. The panoramic views from the castle over the Comtat plain, Mont Ventoux, the Alpilles, and the Dentelles de Montmirail are among the most beautiful in the Vaucluse. Le Barroux is one of those Ventoux villages that deserves an in-depth visit, far from the beaten paths of mass tourism.

The Producers' Market: Apricots at the Source

The Marché des Producteurs d'Abricot du Barroux is held every July 14th in the village square, shaded by century-old plane trees and enlivened by the traditional fountain. Market gardeners and fruit growers from Le Barroux and neighboring villages—Malaucène, Entrechaux, Suzette, Crestet—bring their finest crates of apricots, freshly picked that morning, at producer prices well below supermarket rates.

This is a unique opportunity to buy apricots harvested at full ripeness, fragile and juicy, which would not have survived long-distance transport. These apricots, hand-picked by the farmers themselves, have that concentrated, sweet-and-tart flavor that only ripening on the tree can provide. Alongside the crates of fresh apricots, producers offer artisanal jams, jellies, dried apricots, apricot syrups, homemade liqueurs, and pressed fruit juices.

Family Entertainment and National Holiday Spirit

The July 14th market is part of the national holiday tradition, giving it a particularly festive and joyful atmosphere. Musical entertainment fills the village square throughout the day, with Provençal, jazz, and popular music groups creating a festive folk atmosphere. In the evening, as in all villages in France, the July 14th ball and fireworks bring residents and visitors together in national celebration.

Workshops for children centered around apricots—quick jam making, clafoutis, tarte tatin—allow the youngest to discover the fruits and flavors of the Provençal region in an educational and fun setting. Free tastings of fresh apricots, juices, and jams are organized by the producers throughout the morning, in a spirit of typically Provençal generosity.

Visit the Château du Barroux

The Marché des Producteurs d'Abricot is also the perfect opportunity to visit the Château du Barroux, open to the public in July. This characterful Renaissance castle, with its first fortifications dating back to the 12th century, offers a fascinating tour through several centuries of Provençal history. The restored rooms, watchtowers, ramparts, and panoramic views from the terraces make this castle one of the most beautiful in the Vaucluse.

A visit to the castle can easily be combined with a stroll through the Dentelles de Montmirail or a hike to Mont Ventoux, for which Le Barroux is an excellent starting point. Hiking trails from the village wind through vineyards, fragrant garrigue, and oak forests, with spectacular views of the Comtat plain and Mont Ventoux.

Outdoor Enjoyment and Conviviality

The Marché des Producteurs d'Abricot takes place entirely outdoors, in the village square and adjacent streets. The July heat is tempered by the shade of the century-old plane trees and the coolness of the fountain, in an idyllic summer Provençal village setting. Tables and benches are provided for visitors to sit, taste, and enjoy the market atmosphere in the serenity of this timeless village.
