Founded to preserve, promote, and celebrate this local fig variety, the brotherhood brings together producers, enthusiasts, and friends of the fig in the spirit of conviviality and sharing typical of Provençal gastronomic guilds. Its members, wearing their distinctive ceremonial robes, carry on the traditions of induction and promotion of their signature product with a blend of solemnity and good-natured humor.

The brotherhood plays an essential role in safeguarding the varietal diversity of the Provençal fig tree. By selecting, propagating, and distributing authentic Longue Noire saplings, it helps prevent this local variety from disappearing under the pressure of standardized commercial crops. This work of genetic and cultural preservation is all the more precious given that many regional fig varieties have already vanished in France over recent decades.

The Fig Festival: A Festive and Popular Day in July

The Fig Festival takes place every year on a Sunday in July, right in the middle of the early fig season. The timing is no coincidence: July is the month of the first harvest (known as "figues-fleurs" or summer figs), the earliest ones, which herald the great autumn season. The Longue Noire trees are harvested starting in mid-July for this exceptional first crop.

The day centers around the producers' market, which brings together fig growers from Caromb and neighboring villages, as well as other local producers from the Vaucluse region: market gardeners, olive growers (Rhône Valley olive oil), beekeepers (lavender and garrigue honey), winemakers (Ventoux AOC wines), cheesemakers, and jam makers. Visitors can taste, buy, and chat directly with the producers, embracing the spirit of short supply chains and the promotion of local terroir.

Gastronomy, Entertainment, and Brotherhood Inductions

Culinary preparations featuring figs are on offer: homemade fig jam, dried figs, figs with honey, fig tapenade, and goat cheese with figs. Local chefs provide cooking demonstrations centered around the fig.

Entertainment and performances bring the day to life: Provençal music, traditional dances, children's games, and street performances. The induction ceremony for new members of the Confrérie de la Figue Longue Noire is one of the highlights of the day, blending ritual solemnity with Provençal good cheer. Its old medieval town center, shaded narrow streets, 13th-century bell tower, fountains, and leisure lake make it a delightful destination on a summer day. The village is surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and orchards that bear witness to the agricultural richness of this Ventoux foothills region, situated between the Comtat Venaissin plain and the wooded slopes of the "Giant of Provence."
