The authentic and artisanal Christmas market at the foot of the castle
Every year during the four weekends of Advent, the medieval village of Kaysersberg hosts one of the most authentic Christmas markets in Alsace. Created in 1987 by the Association de Noël à Kaysersberg, this artisanal market brings together around thirty carefully selected chalets in the Cour de l'Arsenal and behind the Sainte-Croix church, at the foot of the imperial castle ruins. An exceptional medieval setting for an authentic Christmas.
Kaysersberg, elected « French Favorite Village » in 2017, offers an exceptional setting for its Christmas market. Nestled at the foot of the 13th-century imperial castle ruins, the village displays its half-timbered houses, cobbled streets, and sculpted fountains in a preserved medieval atmosphere. It is in this enchanting setting that the wooden chalets of the Christmas market are set up each year, creating a warm and intimate ambiance that visitors find nowhere else.
What distinguishes the Kaysersberg market from other Alsatian markets is the rigorous selection of exhibitors by the Association de Noël à Kaysersberg. Only artisans offering genuine original handmade creations are selected: turned and carved wooden toys, blown glass tree decorations, handmade jewelry, lamps, ceramics, textiles, and art objects. No industrial products are tolerated, guaranteeing visitors an authentic and quality offering.
The market unfolds on two emblematic sites of the village: the Cour de l'Arsenal, a picturesque inner courtyard surrounded by historic 17th-century buildings, and the passage behind the Sainte-Croix church, a jewel of Alsatian Romanesque art which houses a remarkable sculpted altarpiece from 1518. Around thirty wooden chalets offer their artisanal treasures in an intimate and warm atmosphere, away from the hustle and bustle of big cities.
In parallel with the artisanal market, a Christmas Farmers' Market is held on the Place de la Mairie throughout Advent. Local producers offer Alsatian regional specialties: foie gras, cured meats, mountain cheeses, gingerbread, jams, honey, and Alsatian wines. It's an opportunity to discover the authentic flavors of the Kaysersberg valley while strolling among the decorated stalls.
On Advent Sundays, the Sainte-Croix church hosts concerts of sacred and traditional music that resonate under the Romanesque vaults. Thematic exhibitions are organized each year, exploring an aspect of Alsatian Christmas heritage. In 2025, the exhibition was dedicated to Christmas textiles in Alsace, showcasing the region's rich textile tradition.
The 2026 edition of the Kaysersberg Christmas Market will be held on the Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from November 27 to December 20. The authentic artisanal market will offer its original creations in the Cour de l'Arsenal and behind the Sainte-Croix church.
