Horticultural fair in the village of George Sand
The Mers-sur-Indre Flower and Plant Fair is a spring event created in 2004 in this small village in the Indre region, nestled in the heart of George Sand's country. Every second Sunday of May, around the Ice Saints, the village comes alive to welcome amateur gardeners and botany enthusiasts. The fair extends along Rue George Sand and into the Domaine Hall, a magnificent 18th-century barn, offering a bucolic and authentic setting.
The fair brings together a selection of specialized producers from all over the region: nursery owners, rose growers, producers of rare plants, medicinal plants, succulents, and carnivorous plants. Visitors can discover varieties not found in garden centers, benefit from professional advice, and leave with quality plants for their gardens. Artisans also offer creations in wood, leather, and porcelain related to the plant world.
One of the highlights of the fair is the creation of the rose 'La Diablesse', a variety named in homage to the village and its connection to George Sand's novel La Mare au Diable. This naming ceremony, celebrated during the 10th edition in 2014 in the presence of Patricia Darré and Cyril Huvé, symbolizes the literary and botanical roots of this event. The 'La Diablesse' rose has since become an emblem of the fair and the village.
Beyond the plants, the Flower and Plant Fair offers a farmers' market with about twenty local producers, a flea market, street music entertainment, and fairground rides for children. On-site catering is provided by the festival committee with local products. A photo contest on the theme of gardens and nature is also organized. The event attracts many visitors each year to this peaceful village, contributing to its tourist appeal and the enhancement of its Sandian heritage.

The 30th edition of the Mers-sur-Indre Flower and Plant Fair was held on Sunday, May 10, 2026, from 9 AM to 7 PM, in the heart of the small Berrichon village dear to George Sand. A traditional event on the second Sunday of May, close to the Ice Saints, the fair once again took over Rue George Sand and Domaine Hall, an 18th-century barn.
Each edition is organized around a plant theme. For this 30th anniversary edition, the fair highlighted barks — their textures, their uses in the garden, their landscape virtues, and their role in the life of the tree.
As every year, Rue George Sand welcomed a selection of producers from across the region: nurserymen, rose growers, producers of rare plants, medicinal plants, succulents, carnivorous plants, as well as potters, sculptors, and exhibitors of agricultural equipment. Visitors could leave with varieties not found in garden centers and benefit from the advice of passionate professionals.
The farmers' market brought together about twenty local producers offering artisanal products and Berry specialties. The flea market, street music entertainment, and the small funfair completed the day. On-site catering was provided by the festival committee with local products. The traditional photo contest on the theme of gardens and nature was once again renewed.
Created in 2004, the fair celebrates its 30th edition in 2026 and confirms its roots in the spring horticultural calendar of the Indre department. Beyond plants, it remains a highlight of village life and a discreet tribute to the Sandian heritage — embodied since 2014 by the rose «La Diablesse», named in a nod to the novel La Mare au Diable.
