About Riom ès Contes
Montagne de livres is a festival hosted by the Escale Éthique association in Riom-ès-Montagnes, in the Cantal region. Originally launched in 2015 as Riom Es'Contes, this annual summer event takes place every July, bringing together storytelling, theater, music, and workshops centered around books and cross-cultural exchange. The festivities are held outdoors, centered around the Place du Monument in the heart of the village.

Access
Riom-ès-Montagnes is located in the northern part of the Cantal, approximately 90 km north of Aurillac and 100 km southwest of Clermont-Ferrand.

The events take place outdoors in the town center: at the Place du Monument (Coudert area) and the Place de la Halle for the Saturday morning market.

From stories to books
The Escale Éthique association, a non-profit cultural organization founded in 2012 and based in Riom-ès-Montagnes, launched the festival in 2015 under the name Riom Es'Contes to promote intercultural dialogue. The association also publishes storybooks created in collaboration with partners in Togo, Algeria, India, and Portugal, and showcases its book projects from Moldova and Peru during the festival.
A look back at the 2023 edition
The ninth edition took place on July 15 and 16, 2023, with a special focus on Latin America. The program featured a storybook stand at the Place de la Halle market, a pay-what-you-want Peruvian meal, singing and body percussion workshops, storytelling tea times, an Afro-Colombian concert, an evening of world tales, and a flea market on Sunday morning.
Montagne de livres
Since 2025, the festival has been known as Montagne de livres. It continues to be held in July; it has no connection to October.
