Jazz and improvised music in the City of Writing
In the heart of Montmorillon, a medieval town in the south of Vienne, famous for its bookstores and Romanesque heritage, the Montmorillon Jazz Festival offers jazz and improvised music concerts every summer at the Espace Gartempe and outdoors. This intimate summer event celebrates contemporary jazz creation, vocal jazz, swing, and free improvisation in a human-sized city, nestled in the Gartempe valley, where culture permeates daily life throughout the year.
The Montmorillon Jazz Festival is part of the rich cultural landscape of this small town in southern Vienne, world-renowned for its City of Writing and Book Crafts. Every summer, music lovers gather at the Espace Gartempe and in the town's heritage sites for evenings dedicated to jazz in all its forms: from contemporary jazz to free improvisation, from swing to vocal jazz, as well as creative music and unique musical encounters.
The festival showcases improvised music and unique artistic projects. Far from the beaten paths of mainstream jazz, the program highlights young talents from the French jazz scene and original ensembles that push the boundaries of the genre. From acoustic trios to electric quartets, from voice-bass duos to chamber jazz ensembles, each edition offers a demanding yet accessible musical exploration. Open jam sessions complement the concerts and provide a space for freedom where guest musicians and local instrumentalists come together for spontaneous and creative exchanges.
Sub-prefecture of Vienne, Montmorillon is a town of character nestled in a bend of the Gartempe river. Its medieval quarter, dominated by the Notre-Dame church and its remarkable 12th-century Romanesque portal, houses the famous City of Writing where about ten bookstores, calligraphy workshops, and book artisans perpetuate the tradition of knowledge. The Octogone, a unique funerary chapel in France, and the half-timbered houses along the Gartempe riverbanks create a striking setting that gives the concerts a unique atmosphere, blending intimacy and grandeur.
The Montmorillon Jazz Festival is part of a rich cultural season supported by the municipality and local associations. Montmorillon, labeled Petite Ville de Demain (Small Town of Tomorrow), relies on culture as a lever for development and attractiveness. The Espace Gartempe, a modern and well-equipped performance venue, hosts an eclectic program throughout the year—theater, classical music, rock, one-man shows—of which the jazz festival is one of the summer highlights. Driven by passionate volunteers and supported by the City, this event contributes to Montmorillon's influence and the cultural vitality of southern Vienne, a rural territory where every artistic initiative counts.
The Montmorillon Jazz Festival returns for a new summer edition at the Espace Gartempe and outdoors in the medieval quarter. Two evenings of jazz and improvised music concerts are planned for July 2026.
