Classical and world music concerts in a 12th-century Cistercian abbey
Nestled in the Aube valley, in the heart of the Parc national de forêts, the Abbey of Auberive is a jewel of Cistercian heritage founded in the 12th century. A daughter of Clairvaux and the 24th foundation of Saint Bernard, it has crossed the centuries by constantly reinventing itself: prosperous in the 13th century, scarred by the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of Religion, rebuilt in the 18th century, transformed into a cotton mill and then a women's prison in the 19th century — its most famous inmate was Louise Michel, imprisoned for twenty months after the Paris Commune.
Since 2005, the Volot family has opened this site to the public and transformed it into a contemporary art center, housing over 2,500 works of figurative expressionism and outsider art. It is in this setting steeped in history and art that the association AC2A (Arts and Culture at the Abbey of Auberive) organizes each summer, since 2011, a musical season offering high-quality concerts in the remarkable acoustics of the abbey halls.
The Musical Season of the Abbey of Auberive is distinguished by the diversity of its programming. Classical music, baroque music, Argentine tango, oriental music, jazz, theatrical and musical creations follow one another throughout the summer, performed by talented artists. Concerts are held on Saturday evenings at 6:30 PM in the intimate spaces of the abbey, creating a unique atmosphere where architectural heritage resonates with live music.
Among the invited artists and ensembles over the years, there are leading chamber music ensembles — trios, quartets, soloists — as well as ensembles specializing in early music or world repertoires. Each concert is an invitation to a sonic journey, in a place that inspires with its beauty and serenity.
The Musical Season contributes to the cultural influence of Haute-Marne and the Parc national de forêts. It attracts a music-loving audience from all over the Grand Est region and beyond, who take the opportunity to discover the heritage and natural riches of the territory. The abbey also offers contemporary art exhibitions, historical guided tours, and artistic workshops, making each visit a complete cultural experience.
Accessible and friendly, the musical season is aimed at all audiences, with a pricing policy that encourages access for young people and families to quality live music.
