The National Day in Marcoussis
The town of Marcoussis, a jewel of the Montlhéry plain in Essonne, celebrates the National Day each year with one of the most anticipated fireworks displays in the region. The festivities take place in the exceptional setting of the Parc des Célestins, a listed historic site that offers an incomparable natural stage for this republican event.
Parc des Célestins, an exceptional setting
With its ruins of the Celestins castle, its shaded alleys, and its 17th-century orangery, the Parc des Célestins is a remarkable heritage site. This location, situated on Ruelle des Célestins in Marcoussis, is the natural backdrop for major municipal events. It is from the Orangery of the Parc des Célestins that the fireworks are launched, their reflections illuminating the old stones in a striking spectacle.
The July 13th Fireworks
At 11 PM, the sky of Marcoussis ignites with a carefully choreographed fireworks display, visible from throughout the park and surrounding areas. Residents of Marcoussis and neighboring towns gather on the park lawns to watch this pyrotechnic show that punctuates the eve of the National Day each year. Colorful bursts explode above the castle ruins in a setting worthy of the greatest adventure films.
A Village with a Rich History
Marcoussis, with its 8,000 inhabitants, is a town with a rich medieval history. In addition to the Celestins site, the town houses other vestiges and heritage sites testifying to a glorious past. The National Day takes on a special resonance here, as a reminder of the historical continuity between the feudal past and contemporary republican values.
Access and Atmosphere
The Parc des Célestins is accessible on foot from the town center of Marcoussis. Residents often arrive with their families, set up their blankets on the grass, and await the first fireworks in the cool summer night. Friendliness and simplicity characterize this event where people take the time to gather and share.
