The Montlhéry Medieval Festival
Montlhéry, in the Essonne region, preserves a tower from its fortress that dominates the plains and holds nearly a millennium of history. Every September, during the European Heritage Days, the town organizes its Medieval Festival around this tower and in the nearby Parc de la Souche. The two-day event attracts thousands of visitors from across the Île-de-France region.
A two-day medieval village
Parc de la Souche is the heart of the festival: a medieval and historical market, civilian and military reenactment camps, a performance stage, a petting zoo, a climbing tower, games and activities for children, and food and drink stalls. Artisans demonstrate blacksmithing, woodworking, textile crafts, and other medieval-inspired trades. Interactive workshops and a medieval house construction project showcase traditional building techniques.
Shows from morning till night
Invited troupes perform on stage and throughout the park: equestrian shows, medieval music, juggling, fantasy street performances, and fire shows. On Saturday night at 10 pm, a grand fire show concludes the day.
Montlhéry's heritage
The Tour de Montlhéry is open for free all weekend, offering small-group climbs with views over Essonne and the southern Île-de-France. The Prisons de la Prévôté are also accessible as part of the European Heritage Days. The Maison du Patrimoine hosts exhibitions, reenactments, and activities, while guided tours of the historic center depart from the Tower upon registration.
A free festival
Access to all sites, shows, and tours is free. Only purchases from artisans, merchants, and food stalls are at the visitor's expense. A free shuttle train runs continuously between the town's parking lots and Parc de la Souche.
