Free discovery of the biodiversity and natural spaces of the Puy-de-Dôme
Every year in May, on the date closest to May 22 (International Day for Biological Diversity), the Nature Festival offers thousands of free activities throughout France to celebrate nature and raise public awareness of biodiversity. In the Puy-de-Dôme, the Departmental Council and numerous partners organize a rich program of nature outings, wildlife and flora observations, hikes, citizen science workshops, and openings of natural sites in the department's Sensitive Natural Areas. The Chaîne des Puys, the Massif du Sancy, and the department's many protected areas offer an exceptional setting for these naturalist discoveries accessible to all ages.
The Nature Festival is the largest national event dedicated to nature and biodiversity. Created in 2007 on the initiative of the French Committee of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Terre Sauvage magazine, this event brings together millions of participants across France every year for thousands of free activities.
The Puy-de-Dôme department offers a remarkable diversity of natural environments: the Chaîne des Puys, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Massif du Sancy, crater lakes, high-altitude peat bogs, the valleys and forests of the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park. The Departmental Council manages a network of Sensitive Natural Areas (ENS) which are the focus of specific activities during the Nature Festival.
For five days, the department offers numerous free activities:
The Puy-de-Dôme Departmental Council is a major player in the Nature Festival in its territory. Through its policy of preserving Sensitive Natural Areas and its commitment to biodiversity, the Department organizes and coordinates numerous awareness-raising actions throughout the year, with a highlight during the Nature Festival in May.
All activities are free and open to all audiences, from families with young children to experienced naturalists. The outings are led by nature guides, Departmental agents, naturalist associations, and passionate volunteers who share their knowledge of local biodiversity.
The 20th edition of the Nature Festival will be held from May 20 to 25, 2026, throughout France, including the Puy-de-Dôme. This anniversary edition will highlight two themes: '24 hours in the heart of nature' and the intersections between art and nature. Thousands of free activities will be offered in the department's natural spaces.
The Nature Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary edition from May 20 to 25, 2026. This anniversary edition will feature thousands of free activities across France, many of them in the Puy-de-Dôme.
Two themes are highlighted in 2026: '24 hours in the heart of nature' with bivouacs and night immersions, and the intersections between art and nature. Other activity ideas are proposed: country chats, citizen science, nocturnal biodiversity, and protected natural areas.
The program of activities in the Puy-de-Dôme is published each year in the spring on the website fetedelanature.com and on the website of the Puy-de-Dôme Departmental Council. Activities take place in various towns and villages in the department.
Most activities are free access. Some outings require prior registration due to limited spaces.
All activities are free.
