A jewel box of lights to celebrate the magic of Christmas in a medieval castle
Noël au Château de Langeais, as part of 'Christmas in the Land of Castles', transforms this medieval fortress into a jewel box of lights every winter. From November 30 to January 5, the furnished rooms are adorned with candles, lanterns, and garlands for an intimate atmosphere. Creative workshops, storytelling with Léon the dragon, and evening openings with stilt walkers: the program invites young and old to experience a unique heritage experience in Touraine.
Each year, the Château de Langeais participates in the 'Christmas in the Land of Castles' event, a unifying initiative that illuminates several Loire Valley castles in Touraine during the holiday season. From November 30 to January 5, this imposing 15th-century medieval fortress, famous for hosting the wedding of Charles VIII and Anne of Brittany in 1491, transforms into an enchanting jewel box of lights.
Visitors discover the castle's fifteen richly furnished rooms in a new light, enhanced by original lighting. Flickering candles, delicate lanterns, sparkling garlands, and dimmed lamps illuminate each room, creating alternating intimate and lavish atmospheres. Tapestries, chests, monumental fireplaces, and period furniture take on a magical dimension under this soft lighting, offering a radically different visitor experience than the rest of the year.
The Noël au Château de Langeais program offers numerous family activities during school holidays. The lantern workshop allows children aged 7 and up to make their own lantern decorated with motifs inspired by the castle. Younger children (4-8 years old) are invited to follow 'Léon the Dragon's Stories', a 45-minute storytelling walk that takes them into a magical world with a friendly dragon.
The highlight of the festivities, the evening openings, offer a truly magical experience. At dusk, the castle opens its doors for an extended visit of the illuminated interiors. In the courtyard, luminous stilt walkers mingle with visitors, creating a fairytale spectacle. These exceptional evenings allow you to discover the castle in a unique atmosphere, between shadows and lights, in the winter silence of Touraine.
The Château de Langeais, owned by the Institut de France, is one of the few Loire Valley castles to have retained its functional drawbridge and its period-furnished interiors. The Christmas visit allows you to appreciate this exceptional heritage in a festive and warm setting, complemented by the wooded park offering a panorama of the Loire River and the medieval town of Langeais.
