Traveling storytelling festival in the Pays de Bourdeaux, in the heart of the Drôme valley
For over 37 years, the Nouvelles du Conte festival has been making the village of Bourdeaux and its surroundings vibrate to the rhythm of stories and tales. This storytelling festival, one of the oldest of its kind in France, has created a unique event where spoken word takes center stage, brought by artists from all walks of life.
The originality of Nouvelles du Conte lies in its traveling nature. Performances are not limited to the Bourdeaux village hall: they take over the squares, gardens, restaurants, campsites, markets, and paths of the Pays de Bourdeaux. The "Contes ici et là" (Stories Here and There), performances in public and private spaces, invite spectators to unexpected encounters with the art of storytelling.
The program combines evening performances at Champ Roch and the Bourdeaux village hall, market announcements animated by storytellers in the markets of Bourdeaux, Saoû, and Dieulefit, sunrise storytelling walks, and aperitif performances ("Devant le rideau" - In Front of the Curtain). Each day offers several events suitable for all ages, from toddlers to adults.
Nouvelles du Conte also offers storytelling practice workshops for children (7-11 years old) and adults. The children's workshop "I Have a Story to Tell You" and the adult workshop "Telling Stories with Who We Are" allow participants to discover the art of oral narration, guided by professional storytellers.
Bourdeaux, a small perched village in the Drôme valley, offers an intimate and warm setting for this festival. The organic farm-to-table buffets, offered during certain evenings, reflect the festival's connection to its territory and its commitment to responsible and convivial culture. The festival is supported by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, the Drôme Department, and the Dieulefit-Bourdeaux community of communes.
The 38th edition of the Nouvelles du Conte festival takes place from July 30 to August 10, 2026, in Bourdeaux and the Pays de Bourdeaux (Drôme), on the theme « Humans have no roots, they have feet ». Ten days of tales, travel and migration stories, with about thirty French-speaking storytellers, open-air shows at Champ Roch, market cries, storytelling walks, and workshops for all ages.
For its 38th edition, the Nouvelles du Conte festival explores the theme « Humans have no roots, they have feet »: stories of travel, migration, and displacement brought to life by about thirty spoken word artists.
Each day combines free nomadic tales at 11 AM in the village, family shows in the afternoon at the village hall (salle des fêtes), and evening open-air shows at Champ Roch (relocated indoors in case of rain). Additionally, there will be market cries in Bourdeaux, Saoû, and Dieulefit, open stages for amateur storytellers, storytelling walks and hikes, workshops for children and adults, a bookstore, exhibitions (press drawings by Hani Abbas, memory of Huguenot plants), and morning Tai Chi sessions.
Food is available on-site in the evening at Champ Roch (farmer's buffet by reservation, picnic area).
