Nuit des Musées en Essonne: Art and Culture in the Dark
Every third Saturday of May, the Nuit des Musées invites the public to explore the museums and cultural sites of Essonne from a new perspective: the night. This national event, coordinated by the Ministry of Culture, takes on a special dimension in Essonne thanks to the diversity and originality of the participating sites.
Exceptional Sites Open for the Night
Each edition of the Nuit des Musées en Essonne brings together a collection of remarkable sites that offer free late-night openings and special events:
- Le Cyclop in Milly-la-Forêt: a monumental sculpture nestled in the woods, created by Jean Tinguely and Nikki de Saint Phalle with the participation of artists from around the world. At night, Le Cyclop reveals its metallic and luminous interior in a unique artistic performance combining electric guitar, tap dancing, and percussion.
- Musée Palaisien du Hurepoix: free late-night opening in this municipal museum dedicated to the local history of Palaiseau and the Hurepoix plateau.
- Mus'X — Musée de l'École Polytechnique in Palaiseau: free opening with access to the collection of historical scientific instruments, uniforms, and archives of the prestigious school.
- Château de Dourdan: night visits of this medieval fortress with original themed activities.
- Musée Sciences ACO in Orsay: night discovery of the Anneau de collisions, one of the world's first particle accelerators.
Le Cyclop, Jewel of the Nuit des Musées en Essonne
Le Cyclop in Milly-la-Forêt is undoubtedly the most spectacular site of the Nuit des Musées en Essonne. This 22-meter-high monumental sculpture, hidden in the woods of the Fontainebleau forest, was designed by Jean Tinguely and Nikki de Saint Phalle, with contributions from renowned artists such as Jean-Pierre Raynaud, Arman, Larry Rivers, and Ben.
During the Nuit des Musées, Le Cyclop comes alive during a unique nocturnal artistic performance: electric guitar, tap dancing, and percussion resonate within its illuminated mechanical interior, creating an unforgettable sensory experience from 9:30 PM to 11:30 PM.
Art, Science, and Heritage
The unique aspect of the Nuit des Musées en Essonne is its diverse range of venues, blending:
- Contemporary artistic heritage (Le Cyclop)
- Scientific heritage (Mus'X, Anneau d'Orsay)
- Medieval heritage (Château de Dourdan)
- Local and regional heritage (Musée Palaisien du Hurepoix)
This diversity reflects the cultural richness of a department often underestimated but which hosts some of the most original sites in Île-de-France.
A National Event with a Local Dimension
The Nuit des Musées is a national event launched in 2005, coordinated by the Ministry of Culture and celebrated throughout Europe. In Île-de-France, over 200 sites participate each year. Essonne is part of this dynamic with its own unique offerings that demonstrate the commitment of local cultural institutions.
