A weekend to discover the heritage treasures of Essonne
Every third weekend in September, the European Heritage Days (JEP) transform Essonne into a vast open-air museum. Dozens of sites, many of which are closed to the public the rest of the year, exceptionally open their doors to allow everyone to discover the richness of Essonne's heritage.
Essonne is an often little-known department but holds remarkable heritage treasures:
Among the sites that open their doors during the Heritage Days in Essonne:
Each edition of the Heritage Days is placed under a national theme that guides the proposals of the participating sites. In 2025, the theme was architectural heritage. These themes allow sites to renew their programming and open new perspectives on their history.
Beyond simple visits, the JEP in Essonne offer:
Essonne is home to the Saclay plateau, the scientific heart of Île-de-France with its grandes écoles and research laboratories. This scientific and industrial heritage, often unknown to the general public, is highlighted during the JEP, just like the castles and gardens.
The 43rd edition of the European Heritage Days will take place on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20, 2026, with a school day on Friday, September 18. In Essonne, castles, abbeys, remarkable gardens, scientific laboratories, and historic monuments will open their doors for free throughout the department. The 2026 edition is placed under the national themes "Heritage of Photography" (bicentenary of photography) and "Heritage in Danger: Revive, Resist, Reimagine".
The European Heritage Days 2026 will take place on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20, 2026, in Essonne, preceded on Friday, September 18, by a day dedicated to schoolchildren. Dozens of Essonne heritage sites — castles, abbeys, gardens, research laboratories, and monuments — will open their doors, most often for free, for a weekend of discovery of the department.
The Ministry of Culture has chosen two themes for this 43rd edition: "Heritage of Photography," echoing the bicentenary of the invention of photography celebrated in 2026, and the European theme "Heritage in Danger: Revive, Resist, Reimagine." These themes guide the proposals for visits, workshops, and exhibitions at the participating sites.
As every year, many Essonne locations participate: the Château de Dourdan (13th-century medieval fortress), the École polytechnique and its Mus'X museum in Palaiseau, the Khánh-Anh Pagoda in Évry-Courcouronnes (the largest pagoda in Europe), the Château de Villiers in Draveil, Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint Phalle's Cyclop in Milly-la-Forêt, the Méréville estate, or the Museum of Sciences (Orsay Collision Ring).
The detailed site-by-site program will be progressively published starting in summer 2026 on the national Heritage Days portal and on the websites of the Departmental Council and Essonne Tourisme.
